Is the shift lever supposed to float on the shaft or should it be tight. I just noticed that my shift lever sort of floats. The single screw is completely tight but the lever itself is not tight on the shaft. I can move the whole lever laterral.
The bike is an 82 maxim 750.

Is it just the lever that floats, or is there slop in the shaft as well. If it's just the lever, I'n thinking that it is slopped out, or the wrong size. If the shaft moves, you may have some work to do.

    You got it backward.

The lever should be tight on the shaft; the whole assembly will have a little "in-n-out" play. If the lever is indeed floating on the shaft even though tight, you have a problem.

if the lever its self is loose on the shaft pull it off put it in a vise squeeze it together like the bolt does when tightening. take a hacksaw cut the slit where the bolt goes thru make sure your bolt works after cutting if it doesnt run it in from the otherside to strighten the threds and put it back together that will solve the loose shifter problem

The lever I am talking about is the foot lever not the hand lever. The single screw that is supposed to pull the split shaft together is as tight as it can go however I can still move the lever from side to side on the spline. I guess I can take it off and check the spline threads as well as compress the gap a little on the shaft. It seems to get in and out of gear ok but I also know it`s not right. i`ll mess with it later and see if i can fix it. It looks like a no brainer.

Cutlass I dont think your mean at all. As a matter of fact I appreciate any help I can get. Take a look at my other post and maybe you can help me there as well. If you have a couple of pics let me know. I just want to ride safe and have some fun and be caught up in racing and crap like I did on my Ninja. Im over that phase thats why I bought this bike. Dont get me wrong it has some pep but it`s more manageable. I have more questions about little things I have seen but I dont want to start by posting a dozen questions at once. Serious thanks for the help I appreciate it.
