anyone by chance know what the spring height is on those springs that sit on top of the diaphram assembly, underneath the cap.

i pulled the boots off and watched with a mirror. all 4 sliders go up half way. with wide open throttle. i'm wondering if the springs are too tall.

i can pull the rack off and blow compressed air and they go up all the way. but for some reason they aren't going up all the way when mounted.

i've done EVERYTHING, including polishing the bores. there's abosuletly nothing wrong with the carbs other then the sliders aren't going up all the way. and i have a feeling that's why i can't reach max rpm range.

with everything mounted i'm now getting 9k. stand still max rev. without the boots it goes up to 10.5k. but my max speed is 85 mph. she roars like a lion up to 85 but that's as far as it goes.

i need to get them sliders up all the way. any suggestions. i'd hate to cut up the springs if they are the right height.

this bike runs like a champ all day long. it just won't go past 85. less if i'm climbing a hill.

If you cut the springs it increases the spring rate so if anything would make it worse

    What model bike is it?

Has it it always been like this?

Do you have stock air jets?

They only work under vacuum conditions, as long as they are moving freely & dropping with a 'clunk' all's good.

i'm only cutting the springs if they are the wrong ones to begin with. but that's probably not the case since i can blow compressed air and they go up all the way.

everything is stock in the carbs. and the carbs have been pulled 20 times already.

THE BIKE RAN LIKE TOTAL CRAP WHEN I BOUGHT IT.
barely even moved in first gear. everything that was wrong has been fixed and remedied. all that's left is maximum speed. since you all claim to be getting upwards of 100+. and maximum throttle. as mine acts like it has a limiter. on the throttle AND the speed.

it roars to 85 and stops. at a stand still it roars to 9k and sputters like it has a limiter. if i take the air filter boots off it'll go to 10.5k. so i'm thinking of leaving them off on my next ride and seeing what happens.

so i don't know if it's the throttles not going up far enough. or if i need to start looking at the ignition again. since both my ignitor boxes hit about the same speed. i'm tempted to say the coils aren't functioning at the high range. even though they both tested to specs. but that don't explain why 9k throttle at stand still, 10.5k without the boots. but only 6.5k driving in 5th gear.

    Hey Snowwy,
You should put your bike (650) and your state (Utah??) in your sig line.

I pulled a spring out of my Maxim 650 carb and. . .
    it's 3 & 5/8 long (93 MM)

So here's another idea for ya,
Take some bread tie wraps or other fine wire and "coil bind" a small amount of your springs, (measure them), and go for a test ride, you're welcome.

(this saves you from actually cutting them)

thanks time for the infor and help. problem isn't the springs. but they did measure the same. it's something with the air filter box. took the boots off and all i gots to say is this.

THERE AIN'T NO WAY IN HELL YOU ALL ARE HITTING 100 UNLESS YOUR A DAMNED SKELETON OR HAVE HOLES IN YOUR BODY.

    ROFL.

without those boots. i'm hitting 10.5k in FIRST AND SECOND gear. no spitting or sputtering. she just roars till she can't roar no more.

i'm getting 7k in fifth gear now. i'm not heavy, but i'm not skinny either.

only way i'm going to hit 100 IF I'M LUCKY is by adding a windshield.

i can't see anything wrong with the box. so i do't know what to do for filters. other then pods.

i don't see performance getting any better then what it is. i think i can finally put an end to this particular saga.

mine did the same thing, red line in 1,2,3 4 started acting funny and 5 hit the wall at 5K
just wouldn't go past 5000 in 5th, up hill down hill nothing
raised/lowered the needle bigger jets tried it all, nothing
put on a supertrapp muffler and all is fixed, without back pressure your mixture is all messed up and changes throughout the rpm range
you need some kind of restriction in those glasspacks and most likely 1 size bigger man jet

I don't know much about these bikes (but I'm learning), but I can help you here. Click on "My Account" on the left, under "Member options" in the "Main Menu". Then click "My Profile Information", it will be under "My Account Tools", also to the left. There you can add a host of information about yourself. Your signature will be displayed under all your posts, I put my bike in there.

To post a picture, you need to host it first. Lots of people like Photobucket, because you can join up and create your own galleries and other stuff. I don't like signing up to things unless I have a good reason to though, so I use http://www.imageshack.us, which lets you host images without signing up (though you effectively loose control of the uploaded image). Once you do so, you should be able to find the URL to the image, to post it on these boards, put the image URL between the [IMG] tags. You can write them out manually or click the symbol that looks like a postcard (under the bold B) to enter them into a post.

SnoSheriff, the admin, recommends a 500x500 or smaller picture resolution, and file size under 100Kb, which helps prevent the forums from being stretched and slow loading to users with slow internet, though I'm not sure how well this is actually enforced.

For easy reference, I've sized this image to 500x375 pixels, with image compression to bring it to just under 100Kb.

You can also use address tags to post images as a link, or a link name method, which lets you link like this, which is useful for oversized images that shouldn't be posted as images on the boards, like that one, which is the top image in it's original state (3264x2448 resolution and over 3500Kb, don't click that link if you have dial-up!)

If you click on quote to quote this post, you can see exactly how I've entered the URL's into the post.

As for getting your own image gallery, they seem to require a program called Coppermine, which I am unfamiliar with.

my problem is in the air filter box. it's choking the carbs down. and i don't know why. i've pulled the air filter out. even disconnected the breather tube.

whatever the reason. she's doing all she's got without the boots hooked up to the air filter box. no more spitting and sputtering. she just roars till she can't roar anymore.

Snowwy, if you get your bike all wound up- top speed, where it "hits the wall" at 85, then kill it, and coast (safely), you can pull the plugs and see if you are leaning out, or running rich by seeing if the plugs are white or dark.

Sounds like you're running rich at top speed, from your last post, but Polock thinks you're leaning out. At least it will be easy to figure this out.

the problem was the same even when the mufflers were still on. and since they were blowing holes. i figured they were plugged. i was running with bandaids on to cover the holes.

it's no different with the mufflers vs. glass packs. other then my gas mileage did improve 7 miles to the gallon.

and don't forget. besides lack of full power i'm also suffering poor fuel mileage. this has been my problem since i replaced the ignitor box and got her running on the low end.

what makes the difference is the box. without that box she roars down the freeway now.

i don't want to be running without the box. so i'm still looking into the situation. but at least now i know where to look.

Sounds like your run'in rich with the box on.
Time's idea sounds sound (pun intended lol).
Do the chop with the box on and off.
That will tell you loads as to what is gouing on.
