    Hi all!

My name is John K, I've been a 2 time XJ550 Maxim owner now; my first was forced to find a new home back in 93 by a now exwife. Since then, I just bought another, an 81, which has been left to its own for few years, so I'm doing a lot of work on it.

I used these forums for my education on working on the bike, before ever signing up. I've searched the forums, and not found the answers to a couple of questions though, so I thought I would pose them right with my introduction.

    1. is there any other tank that will easily fit a 550Maxim?
    - Will a 650 tank fit? If it would require mods to the mounting, how extreme?
    - Ideally looking for same basic shape, pehaps bigger...

    2. Has anyone compiled a listing of interchangable parts between the Maxim models, or between the Maxim and Seca's? With parts becoming harder and harder to find, I think this would be the most valuable tool out there!

    Thanks
    John K,

There is not much in common between the 550s and the other XJs; the 550s (Seca-Max) do share some things but have a lot more differences than are readily apparent. The 550 Maxim also shared its frame with the YX-series Radian, so there is some interchangeability there.

The main problem with fitting a tank from a bigger Max will be the length,
the rear mount would be a problem and possibly in the way.

You can make anything fit with a big enough hammer. :)

What I'm thinking is that it might e a fairly easy thing to have the tank mounts moved forward 1/2 inch, or possibly tackweld some new collars on the underside of the tank so that it would fit an inch or so forward... So that length issue; is something I would like to know the distances on...

I've actually been looking at companies that will make a custom tank... then the tank on my bike will have zero rust, fit perfectly, and be worth 2 times the resale value of the bike. LOL

Davstarks, Who needs a hammer? I have a sawzall and a friend with a welder and a thirst for brew.

Just remember that there isn't much clearance for the steering when it is turned all the way
