i took a trip up to Bike week in Laconia last night and the bike ran great. Its a Maxim 750 (1982). The only small problem I had is that when we pulled into a rest stop there was a little smoke coming off of the lower part of the exhaust just under the engine. My guess is that I may be leaking a little oil and it got on the exhaust. It was real hard to tell if it was actually coming off of the exhaust or the engine itself. Maybe this is common for these bikes to smoke a little. The smoke was light and lasted for a short time but the bike fired right back up and I finished the trip.
    Any thoughts!!!!!

I would guess either your neutral switch or the oil level sending unit have begun to leak a little. Both will require the exhaust to be removed the oil sending unti is very easy the neutral switch is a little more involved

You have a minor oil leak somewhere.

Common: Camchain tensioner body-to-cylinder block gasket (will also make you think you have a base gasket leak when you don't.)

Also common, but in the wrong area and only applies to bikes with mechanical tachs: tach drive gear housing oil sealS.

Uncommon, but it happened to me: When I had a REALLY leaky front fork, oil was blowing back onto the motor and ending up on the exhaust collector shields. (And my right boot.)

Thaniks guys I will look into everything mentioned. The other thing is that when I was stuck in traffic at the end of the ride I also noticed that my clutch lever seemed to get real tight. It seemed like it took more effort to engage. The bike seemed to shift fine but actually pulling in the lever seemed a bit tight.

    Lube it.
    Undo it from the Lever
Make a little "Cone" of Aluminum Foil around the Cable and bind the bottom from leaking.
Put some rags down at the bottom end.

Fill the Cone with Oil and let the Oil entering the Cable draw-in whats in the Cone.
    A shot-glass is plenty.

    Keep the Lever-end high.
Tape it to a broom so you can observe the other end.
    When it stops running out.
    You're lubed.

Thanks guys sounds like the tight clutch might be common after heating up. Ricomatic thanks agin for good tips I appreciate it. The good news is we walked around Laconia for a few hours then went back home. It was a it cooler at night and the trip back went real well. The clutch felt pretty good when we got home but was still different from when cold. This is a fun bike to ride but it`s so much different then my Ninja. When I was cruising on my Ninja at around 85~90 it felt like 50~60 on this bikeLOL. That might be a good thing because it will keep me out of trouble.

The Ninja just felt so much smoother and obviously handled much different. It was all factory so the tire was fine but it was real wide.I could get up to 100+ and feel like I was cruising at 60 or so.I think the difference is the age and how things are made.Dont get me wrong I like this bike.
