Prepare for a wall of text. I figure better to give too much information than not enough when looking for help. That being said here's the situation......

I bought a 85 xj700 from a guy that hasn't ran in over 5 years. I only gave a 100 dollars so I fully expected to have to do a fair amount of work to it. Here's a list of the things I have done so far.

    New Battery
    New Starter Solenoid
New Oil Filter and Oil Change(was gas in oil*)
Cleaned Leaking Petcock(didn't work and will be buying a new one soon)
Pulled Carbs and thoroughly cleaned them
    Adjusted Float Heights to 17.5mm
Bench Sync'd carbs using paper clips
    Cleaned out gas tank
    New inline fuel filter
PVC intake manifold with 42mm cone filter(stock box was a mouse house)
    Bought new NGK plugs

Now the problems I'm having. First the easy one. I'm not sure if I should use the new NGK plugs because I saw somewhere on here where someone said that you shouldn't use the plugs that have the "R" in the model number.

The second issue is a little more complex. After reinstalling the carbs, I'm having a problem getting it to run right. First attempt at it I got it to idle good, but when I'd give it throttle it'd bog down and wanna die. Took the carbs back off and resync'd and now it will idle but it's very rough and all over the place. Anywhere from 1-3k. If I give it throttle it will rev and very slowly come down.

I tried adjusting the idle screw #2 and #3 carbs and it's doesn't do anything. I don't know if it's an issue or not but it seems like the idle screw doesn't move the throttle linkage at all. Like it's too short or something. Is that common or am I just retarded?

I also pulled the plugs and they all seem to be running rich. Very sooty. Any help would be appreciated and I don't know much other than what I've learned from hours of researching on here. So don't skip things that are easy and obvious to most of you because they might not be to me. Thanks in advance.

The R in an NGK plug just means resistor - it cuts down on rf noise. Not really an issue - you can use them or not. You can get the same plug with or without the R.

Idle issue sounds like an air leak somewhere, or I have heard low compression can do this too. I had the same problem, and found a blown head gasket. (I am hoping that was the problem)

What size pvc did you use? I have a 85 xj700 and made a pvc intake out of 1 inch pipe but determined it wasn't getting enough air. I'm now going with 1 an 1/2.

The pvc I used was 1" I think. Outside wall to outside wall diameter is 40mm. If I'm not getting enough air I guess I could use a tee instead of the 90 on the other end and run another pod. That would bring in a little more air. Just not sure if that's my problem or not. Any input on what my issues might be that are causing all this?
