I am somewhat new to this site, but have often visited it looking for help. Anyways, since I got my KZ1000 Police model, I havent been riding my Maxim, and apparently my lady friend now has an interest in riding it. I would say it is somewhat heavy for her. I dont think the 81s came with a kickstand, but I was hoping someone knew of a way to put on one so she doesnt have to kill herself putting it on the center stand. I am aware the 82s had one; could the kickstand from that bike be installed on an 81? Any aftermarket kits? Any suggestions is definitely helpful. Thanks guys!

FYI: Once you or your girl learns the center stand trick... It feels like you are lifting about 10lbs.

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25851.html

    Simple version:
Grip left handle with Left hand.
Use right foot to bring center stand down.
Center stand - rock bike a little if necessary.
Right hand grip under seat or model appropriate grip area.
Press down with right foot while lifting a little with right hand.

After knowing the PROPER/easy way to do it, I can now center stand the bike w/o much thought or lifting effort.

Though a side stand would be nice for ground that is not great for centerstand.

i thought they all had kick stands but it seems a few people have some rust in the frame in that area and the kick stand rips the bracket off the frame or the frame fails there
could someone have repaired the frame and left the bracket off ?

I am aware of how to do the center stand, but she is a new rider. It will take her time to fully learn to do it, so I am trying to find a way for a kick stand, not only for her but for the sake of the bike! :D

As far as some 81s having a kick stand installed, is it something I can find and put on mine, or does it have to be welded on? Thanks again everyone!

I'm also a new rider (but not a lightweight). I was implying she could learn the same trick I did in about 2-3 tries ;)

And I'm sure you want a center stand regardless.

Of course. But the problem is, Im 180 lbs compared to her 110 or so lol. So its a conflict between having her try to learn how to do the centerstand and probably drop it a few times, or easing her into it but allowing her the use of a kick stand. Since I will be trying to restore it next month or so, I would hate to see a bike dropped on a new paint job! Hm.... Interestingly enough though, my KZ is easier to get on the center stand than the Maxim if I remember correctly, unless I just have the painful memories of being a new rider lol.

Well after looking at it, I am pretty sure that the tab the kickstand connects to is broken. Its hard to be sure if something is missing if you dont really know what to look for. But there is a metal plate that appears to be broken approximately where a kickstand might be mounted. I would like to ask a favor to anyone who owns this bike. I am in desperate needs of pictures of the kickstand mount for this bike. I cant find any of the internet, I guess people dont like taking pictures of the bottom of their bike :( If I can see what is needed, I can probably make one. Thanks guys.

My 80 Maxim came with both and I took the center stand off.
It kept dragging around corners ; D

Ya, I am pretty sure mine came with one, but it seems the mount broke for it. I am hoping to find a picture for it so perhaps I can make one.

Raven, Yeah, they all came with kick stands and center stands. If you're missing something, either something broke off or was removed.

Some of the early ones also did not have a kickstand switch. Those take a slightly different kick stand. They don't have a tab for the switch. Those that have a switch (which should be visible) will also have a tab for it on the top part of the kick stand.

If you need a pic of an XJ650 mount without the switch, PM me and I'll take one of the bare mount. If you need a non-switched kick stand, I believe I have one available.

Hmm.... those pictures definitely helped. But I am still unsure. I think I see where it should be and where it looks to have probably broke off. I will attach a photo and you guys can tell me what you think. Ugh, after seeing those pics provided, I feel as though my bike is disgustingly dirty :(

This is under the left side close to where the footrest is, on the frame, behind the exhaust pipes. It looks like it could be the broken bracket.

Do you ride a motorcycle or a werewolf?

Broken kickstands are very common. I have been looking for an alternative for the exact same reason, except my "lady friend" is my wife.

    I have found none.

However, I have considered buying the kickstand off ebay, and then taking the bike to a machine shop to have it installed with a manufactured bracket. I really don't think it would be all that difficult. Once you had the kickstand, and if you had a welding machine, you might be able to manufacture one yourself.

Then we decided she should be riding a Honda Rebel. Much more her size.

I know lol, it has been sitting for awhile collecting spider webs and dust. Well, I bought a kickstand off ebay the day before yesterday. I am thinking of seeing if the junkyard here in AZ will let me cut off either the bracket itself or the section of frame around the bracket. Im sure it is broken, and this seems to be the only location of it. Hopefully I can get it confirmed. But, looking at those pics I saw, fabricating one might be a little harder than expected due to the shape and a post for the spring to attach, all while trying to keep as accurate of measurements and angles possible. Have you tried seeing about getting another bracket off another bike?

I haven't looked. As I said a new, more fitting bike, is more likely to work for her.

FYI, she can't get it until she gets a job to pay for it! And it would actually save enough money in gas that it would pay for itself.

I personally like having just the center stand...but I don't have much to compare it to either...and I'm tall enough and heavy enough it's easy to use.

I agree, I rode the bike for two years without ever having a kickstand. I cant say I always wanted only a centerstand, but I made due for what I had. Now its time to fix it up again for her to ride, and if she doesnt, Ill take it again lol.

Oh well, is your wife an experienced rider?

No. Most certainly not. Looking for a reliable, small bike that she likes the looks of.

Ah, I confused forums where I was reading about a Harley.

Anyone know if this is the location of what should be my kickstand bracket?

Im having a hard time with this. I have the kick stand, but as of right now I have no way to get a bracket to weld back on. I called the junkyard here, and they said they will not cut up a frame. It seems as though my only choice is going to have to be to fabricate one, anyone have any ideas?
