Can someone give me tips on relocating the rear turn signals on a 1981 Maxim XJ650, or refer me to a post on this site? I want to mount saddlebags but they don't allow my gf to reach the passenger pegs.

Choices of where to move them are up to you, but a few popular options:
-- Drill holes in the rear fender and mount them there
-- Mount a U-shaped bar of metal to the license place mount bracket (aka signal relocation kit) and mount to that -- Here's an example, but you can make one yourself too
-- Use LED turn signals mounted to the back of the saddlebags

Any of them will require you to make up some extension wires.

This is why I'm buying hard bags with the lights on them.

Thanks, Altus, I'll look at those alternatives.

Most bag rack manufacturers (e.g., Vetter) have a hole in the rear of the rack frame to accept the turn signal stem. You could do something similar by bolting some angle iron to the existing turn signal hole (and another point for stability) so that the angle iron extends backward and drill a hole in the rear part of the angle iron for the signal stem. The turn signals don't need to be all the way back to the tail light/license, just back far enough to allow bags or additional legroom. FWIW a set of Vetter racks would provide good stability and mounting points for both the turn signals and the leather/textile saddlebags.
