Does anyone know if a Seca rear wheel would fit my 1981 xj650?
I want to upgrade to an 18 in. rear.

Yes it fits but it's narrower.

Is there a thicker one that would fit or is that really my only bet?
Didn't some of the Maxims come with an 18?

You can have a custom wide rear rim - (hang on)

Buy a Virago spoke rear rim, brake, and final drive.
Buy a brand new wide rim and stainless spokes from a Harley catalog.
Get someone who really knows what they are doing to lace it up "dished", so you have more driveshaft clearance.
Mount that 170 rear tire with confidence.
Get a front spoke rim to match. Sounds like about $500 !!

Youre not gonna get a 170 on there. It will not clear the shaft.

That cover is the swingarm. You'd have to hard tail it to get it off of there.

Plumber did it. but I do not know how wide of a tire that would allow.

I mounted a 130 on the 18" Seca rear wheel and there's enough room for a 140. My Maxim 16" wheel has a 140 on it and there's still room for a larger (fatter) tire.

I've read that if you take an angle grinder to the inboard side of the swingarm tube (with the driveshaft removed) you can open it up and put a 150 on it.
I've got a 750 seca with an 18" with a Bridestone spitfire 130/80 on it, its only got 2000 (1100 highway Vegas-Oklahoma, 900 street) miles on it (I bought it in April). Wanna trade? It looks like new. Just send me a personal message here. I want lower gear ratios. A smaller wheel will do the trick.

I actually decided to keep my 16 rear. I went out yesterday and bought new tires to put on my bike. Thanks for the offer though.

aw nuts, my son is in chula vista now on vacation and he has a truck. Oh well, the 18 would give you a 10% higher 5th gear, I wanted the 16 for more low end, the nearby dragstrip is only an 1/8th mile and I never ride over 100 mph anyway. Good luck on your bike.
