need help,bottom end noise

    :!: i just redid the carbs,adjusted the vavle shims,plug wires,plugs,oil, and now there is a clonk clonk noise on the right side on the bottom,by the way this is a 85 xj700n.is it my crank or could it just be the clutch needing adjusting ,fianlly got it to were i want it and now iam taking notice of this strang noise down there,,there is 4600 miles on it,when i had the vavle open the cam chain seemed tight,like it should be not to tight..what is some ideas on this noisey chater,yea i guess it more of a chater

    The cam chain would make a noise located more to the middle of the engine, particularly over the valve covers. If it is too tight, the tensioner may have gone out of timing and needs to be reset.

    What you're referring to, and considering the job you've done on the bike, makes me wonder if something like a washer has gone loose in the oil pan...

    My XJ700N has a bunch of miles on her too and I just had to redo the exhaust system. Check for holes or loose hardware around the header pipes, collector box and mufflers. Vibration of something loose could be causing your clunking noise. And if your noise is coming from the bottom of the bike well...

    Get or make a stethoscope to isolate the noice. I had a cracked header sleeve rattle that sounded an awful lot like it was coming from the bottom end. It's surprising how those noises can transmit through the motor.
