    it says 2500cm 3...which is cubic centimeters....

    2500cm3 = 2.5 litres = 2.64125 quarts......

    I dont know the purpose of the stamping on the case....just go by your owners manual for capacity requirements....

    Dont rely on this chart for capacity; however this is straight from the `82 XJ750J Owners Manual......

    It is riddled with errors....their tech writers should have been fired.....
    as you can see from their chart

    2.5L = 3.81 US qts & 2.8L = 2.64 US qts & 3.5L = 3.81 US qts...yeah right

    It is no wonder people get confused....

    fill it until the oil is halfway in the oil window when the bike is level.

    The number cast into the case is the "official" oil capacity; on the 550s it says 2200cm3.

    I say "official" because a 200cc-300cc overfill is what's needed to bring the level up to the top of the window, but with still a "bubble" showing at the top. The overfill will keep your oil level sensor happy during hard acceleration.

    Even the factory books are full of typos or transpositions like that.

    Even though my 700 calls for 3.00 qts (with filter change) I
    leave the last 1/4 in the last bottle, otherwise there's
    no bubble in the site glass.
    You need this little bubble for two reasons:

    1, so you know it's not over filled.

    2, I like to centerstand the bike everyother tank full ( or once a week )& check the level.
    If you had a bubble and it's now gone-the only other liquid ( air cooled)
    your going to get in there is fuel.

    2500CCs, plus another 200cc-300cc for "insurance;" topped off visually.

    2,500 cubic centimeter = 2.64 quart [US, liquid]

    plus 300 cubic centimeter for insurance per bigfitz52

    so

    2,800 cubic centimeter = 2.96 quart [US, liquid]
