I want to replace my original copper exhaust gaskets that fit inside of the muffler pipe as they are worn & when I tighten up the bolt, the pipes are not totally secure to the collector box. But those copper gakets are frozen in there with corrosion over time....

Does anyone have a suggestion for removing the original copper gaskets easily without having to resort to cutting them out... I dont want to screw up the muffler pipe for the replacement gaskets.

    Thanks in advance

I he heated mine up cherry red with a torch cleaned up the rust off clamping bolt put some oil on the threads and re-installed it tightened up like new. I did order new off of ebay but the seller shipped in a padded envelope and they arrived nice and flat looked like someone ran over the envelope with a fork lift. Give it a try nothing to loose. They have to be "Bullied" out.

Use a Dremel Cutting Bit and sever a line through the old gasket.
Heat and hammer a "Pointed-wedge" on the ends of a few 60-Penney Nails.

Drive the Nails in-between the Gasket and Silencer.
As the Gasket lifts-off the Silencer's inside-diameter, ... grab the Gasket with a pair of Vice Grips.

Use a LARGE Screwdriver to twist the Gasket away from the Silencer.
The moroe Nails you use, ... the easier it is.

That will work. I generally gouge away at them until I can damage them enough to get ahold of one edge with a really big pair of needle nose pliers. Then after a shot of Kroil, I twist/rip tear them out.

Thanks guys.....all suggestions should work.....get some use out of my new dremel....off to buy a cutting blade.....

The new ones I got from Chacal are not copper...more like a pliable hard gasket material.....do you know what material the one that he sellsl are made from...will they hold up ??? The ones he sells sure seem like they will come out easier next time around.....I like the new ones he sells

The ones chacal sells are exactly the same as what you will get if you order them from Yamaha today. They are still available (for a lot more money) and they're identical to what Len carries.

I spent a WHOLE LOT of unnecessary cash on my first XJ before I joined XJBikes and discovered XJ4Ever. I was all geeked that Yamaha still carries most of the "consummables" and didn't realize the financial drubbing I was taking in the process.
