What Does An Engine Number Really Tell You?

    I got myself a complete XJ550 engine today. I got it from a reputable breaker who told me that the motor came from a running bike... but that's pretty much all the information the guy could tell me. Is it possible to find out any more details from the engine number? It's 4V8-001210

    While the motor is out, you could drop the "oil pan" and look for odd trash, unusual amounts of copper or ally, and for bits of the plastic chain guides, if there.
