been trying to figure out how to lock the handlebars on my xj. bikes are easy enough to steal, let alone one without locked bars.

on my last bike you just turn the key counterclockwise and it locks 'em up.

however on my xj i turn it and it locks the bars, however the brake light stays on. thank goodness i came back out later on during the night, so that i caught his before the battery died.

am i missing something here, or was this an odd customization from the PO?

don't turn the key completely counterclockwise, that's a parking setting (intended for European countries) there should be another notch just before full lock on the key, that's where your handle bars lock without the park light

You can see how the switch used to be marked (before it wore off) in this photo:

    thanks guys.
i gave it a try and it worked, of course lol :]
although i do find it odd that the key has to have a different amount of pressure applied to it turning CC rather than CW.
o well, who am i to complain?

I suggest going to your local home depot and buying a spray can of graphite lube, never spray wd40 or any other kind of lube where a key goes, graphite is the only lube that doesn't pick up lint or dirt, in the keyway or wafers of the lock. All of us locksmiths use graphite lube spray

    Good luck

You may do this anyway....but take a bit of pressure of the lock by pushing the bar to unload the cylinder.
    Just a thought.

I've havent tried that on my bike. I turned it conterclock wise and it wouldn't do anything so I gave up. I think I might try that again.

1 Make sure your bars are turned all the way to the left
2 You may have to briefly press down prior to turning the key CCW to the lock position - That is what I have to do on mine and it was even in the manual.

I left mine in "park" overnight shortly after buying it, not knowing any better.
I now have a battery charger/tenderer (with a battery mounted pigtail for easy charging)

Have you got a picture of the pig tail? I was thinking of doing something like that, save removing the seat & side panels, when you have a few bikes to keep charged, it's APITA.

I could take a pic. I got it from Walmart ($20) it came with quick connect pigtail for permanent mounting or standard jumper cable grippers.

I even used the gripper end on my cage once. :?
