What are the 2 wires ( red and green ) for on the stator cover. The ine was cut when I took the cover off?

Where is the brown wire supposed to go comming off the rectifer?

Rebuilt, cleaned, jetted my carb many times to get it right.
    New batrery

Had it running. But after a few trips it will not start again. Turns over but will not fire. Will not push start. it was running great though the idle was a little high. It will turn over but not fire. I have been looking it over. Replaced a few wires that looked bad now it will not get spar

getting .7 ohm on the 3 white wires
12.8 volts from the battery after trying to turn over a few times

    Any help would be great

    Thanks

What bike are you working on? I would guess that they are wires to the alternator brushes.

here is a little more information

4.8 ohm arcoss the copper strips on the stator. I just polished them clean. they were a little bit dirty but not burnt

I only have a 550 diagram but think most XJ Yamahas with brushes are like this.

Brown and green go from the regulator to the rotor and there are 3 white wires that go to the stator. Red goes from the regulator/rectifier to the battery and a black to the chassis. The brown wire is also connected to the switched side of the ignition.

    Hope this helps.

By brown going into the Switched side you mean it gets 12v current feed from the battery?

Maan: Yes, the regulator varies the excitation of the rotor dependant on the battery voltage. It uses a switched supply as you only want to excite the alternator when the bike is running.

And what if the 12V feed is not connected to the Brown Wire attached with one of the brushes? Will the charging circuit work without it?

    Thanks Markie

No, it shouldn't. In the XJ550 service manual there is a section on this for testing the regulator.

Be aware that some later XJ's (like my old XJ600) use a permanent magnet rotor and so DO NOT have the brown and green wires.

I have an 83 XJ750 and the electrical system is the same. The red and green wires on the stator cover are connected to the brushes. One brush for each wire they then go to the TCI unit. Without them hooked up your charging system will no work.If the length of the brushes is 10mm they are at there minimum length and should be changed very soon.

Hey, hugger - don't forget to put some pics of your kettle in the gallery! (GT750). I had a GT550A - never had enough money for the 750!
