took off the carbs from my 82 550, About to clean everything during the winter break. Is there a rough setting that I can use for the idle mixture screws? and also the carb sync screws? So that when I put back everything, the bike will at least start so I can tune properly later.

i believe the rough setting for the mixture screws is 2 1/2 turns out, as for the carb sync screws am not sure , theres good people in here that can help you out better with the settings, but i know for sure that when you set the mixture screws screw them in and dont bottom them out hard before you start to un-screw them out for your rough setting.

There is no base setting for the sync screws. If the bike ran fairly well before pulling the carbs then I wouldn't mess with them until I got a carb stick set. If you broke the carbs out of the rack and the setting is lost then set the butterflies with a feeler gauge to .020mm at the bottom when closed.

Man, I sure could have used this info this past weekend. I had no idea where to start with mine, but all I knew was that they were WAY off. My neighbor and I decided to adjust the screws until all 4 butterflies would retain a single piece of paper unless you gave it a good tug. Talk about old schooling it. ;-)

That was Old School ... nice. Use the round spray tube you get taped to a new can of Carb Cleaner. That works pretty good; too.

Pilot Screw adjustments are 2-1/2 Turns OUT from bottoming-out.
    Forget Factory.
Run 'em out to splitting the difference between 3 and 3-1/4. Although an official list hasn't been compiled, yet ... Most of the ColorTuner's are finding that pretty blue color happens in this neighborhood.

If you're a fan of Old School ... you can Sync a 4-Pack with one Vacuum Gauge; too. Look through my old posts for that surprise.

Rick, I don't know about others, but I'm not necessarily a fan of old school. It's just that old school has a tendency to not require the purchasing of new tools that I don't have the funds for at the time. :D

i like ricks approach to old school methods, i think most of them are time proven methods and like you said BK there cheap and in-expensive, allthough having a nice brand-new carb stick , shinny colortune and million piece socket set would be very nice.

I also used a fine drill bit once since my feeler guages went awol. Someone on here also used bread-bag twisty tie things. Void where prohibited by law. Your mileage may vary. See dealer for details.

That's what I originally planned on using, but I couldn't find any, so I just tore up the picture of the YICS tool that I had printed out and used pieces of that. :D

    It's alive......

After cleaning the carbs and adjusting as was recommended, I just couldn't resist so I tried starting....cranked for a bit (pretty cold outside) then started smoothly and ran real smooth too. Now I can't wait for sping.

Thanks for the update. The suspense was killing me!!! What did you use to static adjust the butterflies?

A feeler gauge worked good for me.

    Next time ...

The Red tube that comes with WD-40 and Carb Cleaner makes a pretty good feeler gauge; too. But, if you need something with less diameter ... the shank of a really small Number Drill is a good way to go.
