Basically I'm looking at ebay an there are hundreds of 1157 LED Bulbs to choose from.

I'm not sure which # of bulbs and/or pattern would be best for my 82 maxim that uses the running lights to also light up the plate.

I'm looking at ebay because they are about 1/2 of sites like superbrightleds.com

    Sugggestions and links welcome :)

Have you tried a auto parts store. I got mine from AutoZone, 16 $ for two. My choice of red, white or amber.

I have not seen an adequate 1157 LED replacement - mainly because the amount of LEDs you can put on an 1157 bulb socket is limited (in number, viewing direction and in lumen output). Also, LEDS generally shine in very limited viewing angles so if you are a little off-axis you may not see the tail/brakelight. The most impressive LED conversions I've seen were where a panel of LEDs were constructed to fit inside the tail light lens (and license illumination lens if needed). 40-50 LEDs in a panel will provide impressive lumens! Unfortunately, this almost always warrants custom creations (to fit around the specific internal mounting posts and other moldings). Not extremely difficult (I created a small one with 30 LEDs as a map light replacement inside my car) but not easy either.
