Which direction do I turn the idle adjuster to raise the idle ? Also whats the deal with the choke having to be on for quite some time before theres any chance of idling when its off?
    Thanks

Turn it clockwise to raise the idle -- that screws it in and opens the venturi valves

Not sure about the choke though. When is the last time the carbs were cleaned?

Its on the carb rack in the middle it sticks out like a sore thumb. You have to do this when you engine is warm so wear gloves when you reach in the for the adjustment. The starter motor is right under it. Again clockwise makes iddle rise counter clockwise makes it drop.

When I can get mine to actually idle, it sits at about 1100. Not sure if it's correct, but it works for me!

Well I know the idle for my xj650j is 1050 (I found that on on of the side covers) However sense the bikes are older its ok to have it a bit higher unless everything is in really great condition.
