Anyone have a photo of a starter solenoid?

I need to see a photo of a starter solenoid for an XJ700(X) IN the bike and wired up. A photo of the battery and cables should do it, as long as the solenoid is tucked in behind the battery. Maxim or Maxim X is fine, they both seem to use the same relay.

I just need to see that I've wired my starter and pos (+) cables to the correct posts. I'm not getting anything out of the relay when I try to start. No clicks, no spins of the starter, nothing. Just a drain on the power.

    Thanks!

the thick wires don't matter which way round they are, but one way will fit better, the thin wires sould be in a push fit connector.

Ah, crap. Ok. I was hoping they were reversed. Any idea why I wouldn't have anything when I hit the starter button? No clicks or anything?

Check fuses first, could just be the starter button, cross the 2 large terminals on the relay with a screwdriver.

Make sure you're in neutral, side stand up and killswitch in RUN position.

OK, so I just crossed the terminals with a screwdriver and it cranked like normal. What does that mean? Bad solenoid?

It could be, or it could be the button, next test is to get 12 v direct to the relay, bypassing all your switch & wiring.

I just read Chacal's catalog and it says if jumping the terminals on the solenoid turns the starter motor, then the solenoid needs replacing. Guess I'll be getting another part...

    Thanks for the help!

It should not matter which side the battery + is on Jason. Battery+ on one side and the starter on the other. If you are working on the X I sold you , the solenoid was a aftermarket one and had been wired a little differently than stock. Remember the handle bar switch grounds the solenoid, you need positive on one side of the small solenoid wire and the other one goes to the handle bar switch. I did not wire it that way, the PO I got it from did.

Thanks for the photo, five. That's what I needed to see. I think I've got it wired the way it is supposed to be, though. Dang it.

Mark, I'll give you a call. I think I'm missing something simple, but important here...

OK, so with the help of a couple of forum members, I found the error. The starter lead needs to be connected to the switch lead side of the relay. The battery lead goes on the other side. I had the wires switched, so the relay wouldn't work when grounded properly.
