Engine seems to be running hot 330F

    I just got done rebuilding my 1980 XJ650. (New rings, valve job, gaskets,carb rebuild and cleaning). My bike was running very hot before I adjusted the fuel floats and made the mix richer. I do not know how hot it got, but she stalled on me and wouldn't start. I figured the bike must be running too lean. I bought a laser temp and took my bike for a ride(20 miles) The temp reading on the block was 335F! That seems really hot to me. I have pod filters on the carbs and have read that I may need to re-jet the mains about 25%. I have not colortuned yet(need some more cash) Am I being paranoid about the temp? Otherwise my bike is running great.

    Inspect the Plugs.
    Clean? Too Lean.

    Look at the ceramic surrounding the Center Electrode.
    Hairline fractures?
    Way too Lean.

    Adjust the Mixture screws OUT s-l-o-w-l-y.
    When the Cylinder coughs because its too RICH ...
    turn IN ... s-l-o-w-l-y ... until stable.

    Too lean can kill you.

    You would go from stock 110's to the 114 - 118 range , NOT the 130 range.

    That is hot, is the engine really 'tight', e.g. what is your piston to bore clearance?

    Re-jetting your Carbs to alleviate the lean condition caused by Air Cleaner Pods is going to be one of your new hobbies.

    At present, you think that you'll have that baby running right after the first little tweak to compensate for the Tornado of extra Intake Air insufficiently fueled by the Main Jets.

    It's a challenge.

    Todd what color are the plugs? My bike was running hot the other day. I had originally colortuned but weeks later I developed a small hole in the diaphram. After it's repair the bike ran HOT. the repaired carb changed the mixture and I had to come out more on the mixture screw. As soon as I did (you can hear the idle come up and hear a much more harmonious engine) it sounded better, ran better, and ran cooler. That was just ONE cylinder. with stock jets and pods, I'd say you should immediately come out A Lot on the mixture screws, like 5-6 and check the plug color after riding. you should hear the idle come up when you come Out on the mixture screws (you can adjust the idle on a whole w/ the idle screw later - or during if the idle gets higher and higher and higher w/ each carb tweak.
