Picked up a 1985 Yamaha Maxim XJ700 for a 100 bucks. Guy had it in a barn for the past 5 years and said it wouldn't run. First bike I've ever worked on so don't be too hard on me. So far this is what I have in the bike.....

100 bucks - for the bike
    40 bucks - new battery
20 bucks - lots of carb cleaner
    7 bucks - seafoam
38 bucks - Custom Air Intake (pvc pipe, 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" adapters(from back of carb to pvc pipe), and 42mm cone filter)
22 bucks - Chrome Spike Grips
    27 bucks - All-in-one Tail/Brake/Turn/Tag light License Plate Mount
21 bucks - Shorty Clear Turn Signals
10 bucks - New Starter Solenoid
25 bucks - Oil and new oil filter
58 bucks - New Solo Springer Seat w/2" springs
2 bucks - Inline Fuel Filter

So around 400 dollars so far. Not bad in my opion.
Here's a pic of it when I got it minus the plastic side covers cause I pulled the wiring out to rewire the new solenoid.

Got a couple things done on the bike. Mounted the new turn signals and grips. Fabbed up a bracket for the new rear all-in-one lights set up. Removed the rear fender and cut off the extra section of frame. Finished up the air intake. Set the removed front fender on the back tire to get an idea of what I want to do back there. Also set the seat on(without the springs) where it will roughly be mounted. Still need to fab an exhaust and a couple other things I have planned out.

    New Turns
    [IMG]
    New Rear Lights

    New Intake
    [IMG]
    New Grips
    [IMG]
pic of it as it sits now
    [IMG]

I'll update with more pics as it comes along. I'll have lots of stock parts up for sale before too long. I'm also in need of a tach cover if anyone has one.

I picked em up off ebay. Just type in spike grips and it should bring em up. I'd buy the ones from US seller cause I waited for a month and a half for mine to get here from Hong Kong.

Thanks. If I could just get it to run right I'd finish it up. lmao My buddy is the head painter for Big Dog Motorcycles here in Wichita, Ks so it should have a pretty nice paint job after I get it running.

Well time to update the project thread. I snapped some new pics(crappy cell pics sorry).

Hardtail done with 1" steel tubing and sleeved with 7/8" where it ties into the existing frame. Cut the bottom mount off the stock shocks and welded them in for easy mounting.
seat just sitting on it unmounted
    [IMG]
New crossmember for fender and seat spring mounts. Used old shock mounting tabs for seat spring mounts. Relocated and 180'd the stock crossmember. Welded 4link tabs for on for the new seat mount. I trimmed up the stock battery box and it will be mounted where the factory air box was(also not shown in the pic)
    rear view
    [IMG]
Sectioned a trailer fender and brought it to a point. Also trimmed the rear tank mount and cleaned up the back of the tank.

The fender and tank are getting bodyworked and painted at the moment and I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Then I'll have to clean up the welds and paint the frame when I get it home. Then it's off to the exhaust shop. Just ordered some new goodies for it including and Avon wide whitewall for the front and a Shinko wide whitewall for the back. I'll post up some more pics of the paint job asap.

    Cool looking ride buddy 8)

Want to use straight bars on mine, but when I offered up a set of Renthals the controls on the bars hit the tank :(

    Do you have this problem?

    Cheers .... Rick :)

I did and have since switched back to the stock ones. Was gonna buy a set of black mini apes, but didn't want to have to buy longer cables. :(

Glad it wasn't just me that was having this problem!
I was thinking of seeing if I could source a similar to my standard pair, but straight, without the rake back. That way wouldn't need to extend any cables or wires.

Thanks for the compliments. As far as jetting, I haven't changed the jets. It probably needs it though. I still am trying to fine tune the carbs with little success. I'm gonna say screw it and take it to a bike shop and have them do it I think. I have two people wanting to buy it, but I can't sell it running the way it does.

Looks good, I like the pin stripe. How's the braking without front brakes? If you removed the disc's for the minimal look, you could always put a rear wheel on the front and hook up the brake line to the pedal and have a fat tire on the front.

I only took off the front brake because the sight glass on the reservoir eventually gave out(bought a new one). It doesn't bother me much since I only ride it on short trips around town. It will have the front brakes reinstalled before I sell it though.

It does dim the headlight a bit so I just flip on the brights when I'm in a dim area. Hasn't been a problem so far. Hope you like it on yours as much as I do.

Thanks cmcc, I'm from Hutchinson, Ks and yes it's for sale. I'm wanting to get the carbs tuned right before i sell it though. I would hate to sell something that didn't run perfect when I sold it. Unfortunately I can't find a place anywhere close that works on them. So I'm not sure what the hell to do at this point haha.

my 85 is twin disc so i'd assume his was the same.

only 1100 into the bike is awesome. hell mine cost 1200 for the bike itself. just had our first child too so it'll be a bit before i get to spend any real money on fun stuff again. LOL

Those gauges look like they came off an X but your bike is air cooled. Whats the gauge in the middle?

I missed that comment earlier....yes it is twin disc.

The gauge in the middle is a temp gauge. Bike was bone stock when I got it so I imagine the gauges are factory for the model, but I'm no expert.

Cm, I really haven't thought of what to sell it for, but if you have an offer you could pm it to me.

The temp gauge only came on water cooled bikes like the X, or so I thought. Is it hooked up and working?

They're stock pipes with Harley Screamin Eagle II slip-on mufflers. I had to fab some brackets and shim where they connect to the stock pipe, but it wasn't too bad.

Yeah it would be nice to get a pic of you on the bike, reason being, just try'in to get some idea of what a little taller guy looks like on one of thiese bikes after they've been hard tailed. I've seen atleast 2 dudes with pics of them on there bikes, but each were only 5"6 and looked like they fit on the bike pretty well. Yeah mine has been on the shelf a few months now, but planning on getting at it real soon, so far my seat has been turned into a nice solo seat, and the piece that was between the frame that locked the seat down is cut out.

I'm 6" myself and like to stretch my legs out, and with the double bucket seat that came on mine, made me feel like i was sitting on top of the tank. So im at the point were im either gonna slap a Harley sportbob fender between the frame rails, or im gonna hardtail it. I just dont want to regret going the hardtail route if the bikes gonna look to small under me.

I here ya man, probly should have stated that i did'nt want the bike to feel small under me instead of looking small under me, because im not really worried about what others think, i just want it both ways, but am giving this process a hole lot of thought before i place one nick in the frame, because you cant get it back once you've gone to the point of no return.

I'm 5'10" and need to take some pics anyways so I'll try to do that this week if I have time. It's not too bad, but if I was gonna keep the bike I'd probably do some highway pegs or forward controls.

+1 on forwards. I made my own using the stock stuff, just made a plate and bolted them to it, then welded that plate to a 1" diameter fram piece, and then welded that to the upper frame. then just lengthened the rods.
