Hello to everyone. I am new to the forum and just bought my first bike on the 10th. It's a 1981 XJ550 Maxim. It runs, but has starting issues. I have been reading up a lot on here about carb cleaning and took the dive today. I found some frightening things from the previous owners; Some severely stripped float bowl drain screws, and so far a cracked main jet housing on carb #1. Luckily the bike also came with a spare set of carbs, so I can match up what needs replacing. Thanks for all of the info so far! Tim.

Well, the horrible happened tonight while I was trying to extract a super frozen idle mixture screw...the carb body broke instead of the reverse thread extractor. Couldn't believe it. And the carb I need (#4) that's in use now has a cracked body around the diaphragm from one of the previous owners. Thanks for listening, Tim.
