Hi I am a new owner of a 1995 Seca II. I live in New Jersey moving back to Brooklyn in a few weeks. Was wondering if there were any modifications aside from a jet kit.. (that I definetly need because the warm up times are killer lol) that would make lower end throttle response better... for in city driving.. jumping ,from stop sign to stop sign kinda stuff? Also my top speed on my bike in 1st gear is about 25..30 max at like 8,000 rpm... is that normal?

You should be in 2nd gear around 12 mph. 1st is a start up gear not an over 12 crusing gear.

I'm no expert and a new rider but this is my normal (while aiming for 4-5 k crusing rpm)

1st 0-12 or very short distances - ie 1/2 blocks between stop signs
    2nd 12-30 or 35 in town
    3rd 30-45 slower country roads
    4th 45-55 slower highways
5th over 55 - my local limit is 65 mph

This is how I'm currently riding my FIRST season and before a proper carb job. I mostly go by what feels good, 5k rpm and the speed limits I deal with: 20, 30-35, 45, 55, 65 mph.

Being in the city you'll (legally) be using 1-3 mostly, probably 3rd based on limit and rpms.

First - what do your plugs look like??
A nice tan or pure white??
Can you see 4 Pilot screw heads at the front of your carbs??
Turn them counter-clockwise to get a richer idle.
Get rid of excess play in the throttle cable, and the clutch cable.
Have you checked your valve clearance, or sync-ed your carbs??
Ohm-ed out your coils? Cleaned electrical contacts from battery to relays/kill switches/TCI box??

Just throwing some stuff at you- - Welcome to the site !!

The Seca II isn't all that different than the 550s.

Properly tuned to original specs and with no problems, the bike should be fine around town, with plenty of acceleration for city traffic. I know my 550s are.

You hinted at cold-blooded behavior. You probably need a valve adjustment and carb service, possibly an air filter, maybe new plugs.

You didn't give us much to go on.

I was wondering about the 600's tuning as well...

I've seen a few guys ( different forums) mentioning a needle shim/jet kit to remove the cold bloodednees from them, instead of the traditional XJbike gospel of retuning.

    Sales gimmick? Ignorance, misinformation?

I know a few have said the mixture is set at the factory (so obviously didn't know they could drill out the plugs for access)
