Do you have to remove a head pipe to remove the oil level sensor?

From what I understand, depending upon model. Which is easier I'm not sure since I've not had to pull the sensor.

82 750 Seca, original head pipes, I just want to clean the sensor as it is making the warning light come on.

When is the light coming on, and is your oil level set correctly? There is a technical bulletin from Yamaha warning of oil light activation upon acceleration with oil levels set at mid window. Their recommended fix is to service the oil to the top of the window (just barely a bubble showing).
I've also noted a fair number of these bikes with silly arsed hack jobs on the wiring to the sensor. Have you been spiked as well?

Start with an easy check. Remove the wire from the oil sensor. If the light still comes on check the wire for a pinched wire or bare wire touching ground. If the light goes out then go after the oil sensor.

I have the same problem with my 82 XJ1100 Maxim. Checked the oil level in the window, it is right in the middle. I didn't want to overfill the crankcase. I was about to start checking out the oil sensor, but my bike has an aftermarket 4-1 exhaust on it, which may make it impossible to determine lol. I am going to try adding some more oil and see if that helps. Let me know what works for you

I would perform the check that Lostboy mentioned when the light issue occurs. From the sound of it, you might be suffering with a sticky float in the sensor. When you prepare to do your next oil change, run some SeaFoam in the crankcase (or Marvel Mystery Oil) and see if that doesn't make things right. You could also pull the sensor and clean it out with carb cleaner. Let us know what path you take and the results.

I hate to resurrect an old thread but this is exactly what I'm experiencing now. I had been filling until the bubble was all the way to the top of the window, but now I'm getting an intermittent oil light. Where is the oil sensor located so I can remove it and spray with carb cleaner?

In the oil pan at the very bottom. I'm not 100% but I think the exhaust may interfere with removal, or it could just be a real tight squeeze. Have you tried running it with some seafoam in the crankcase already?

I'm about to try that during my lunch break and see what happens. I'm almost due for an oil change anyway. No sweat there on the exhaust removal, I just hate putting it back ON... haha
