i just got a xj650j (82) and when i did have it running for a minute (before i took carbs off to clean them), when the revs would climb, the headlight got brighter, which i know is supposed to happen with motorcycles, but then the main fuse would blow...im a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff...any suggestions?

i put in blade style fuse holders.....spliced the wires together based on which terminal it went to, so the proper wires are together....or at least i put them the way they were originally when i got the bike.

If you have the correct value fuse in there, you have to look to the regulator.

Look at the Quick Connection Plug-in from the Voltage Regulator to the Wiring Harness.
Look to see it the Connector look like it's melted a little bit.

If you detect damage causes by the wires getting too hot you need to run a test on the Voltage Regulator.

((The Test of the Voltage Regulator is in the Archives. It requires two Meters and can damage a good Regulator if the wrong wires touch.
The EASIEST Test to see if you Problem is the Voltage Regulator is to use a TEST Regulator ... and see how the Bike runs.

    Your on top of it.

Double check your front wheel bearings.

My front wheel bearings died and my front wheel sounded like walnuts cracking when I was about a block from home.

Any Bike that just Sat for 5-Yrs ought to have the Forks done.

At the very least, ... refresh the Fork Oil.

    Get some New Fork Oil.
Get a Bubble Ear Syringe from a Drug Store.

Get a Air Valve Removal Tool and Pull the Air Valve on each Fort Tube Cap.
Take-out the Drain Screw and get rid of the Old Fork Oil.

Hook up a Vinyl Hose from the Air Valve around the Handlebars.
Blow lightly in the Hose to evacuate the Lower Fork.
    Replace the Drain Screw.

Fill a Glass with the Specified Amount of Fork Oil.
Fill the Bubble Syringe with the New Fork Oil fm the Glass.
Put the Nozzle of the Syringe in the Hose.
    Leave an Air Gap,
Let the New Oil flow into the Hose ... s-l-o-w-l-y.

    Easy as 3.14159265 etc.

(Cheat. Use a Heavy Oil or Hydraulic Jack Oil to offset the Springs.
Don't put any Air in the Fork. You have Fork Oil all over. When the Season ends, ...
Do the whole forks and Headset Bearings, too.)

    Ear Syringe:
