Found out I have holes under both my mufflers. Not sure what way to go about this. Does anyone recommed a specific Harley muffler that would be a good match for my stock 1981 XJ650 Maxim I think I have the non-YICS model. Im not looking to spend a lot of money and I don't mind small amount of fabrication to do.
Another question is does any one have a set of stock muffler they want to get rid of? How about a set of Harley mufflers?
Any tips or help is welcomed.

I seen this "I need to change my mufflers" and this is the first thing that came to my mind was"why do you get exhausted quickly"... lol

I want to say 03 and earlier are a direct fit for our bikes. You of course will have to cut off your old mufflers and fit the new ones on either with an adapter and clamp setup or weld them on. I got a couple sets off ebay for about $30 a pair give or take.

You can also find a stock exhaust on ebay once and awhile. I got lucky and found a complete setup for like $125 in GREAT shape. Needless to say I jumped on it right away. Keep your eyes open. If you want a stock system and feel like waiting you can have some patches put on your mufflers to get you by for a while. Just another option..

    Good luck hope that helped!

What would these patches consist of?
I think I'm more interested in the Harley mufflers since I like the revese cone look better that the stock look. I guess I'll start looking online or on cl.

Cut out a square or rectangular patch from galvanized tin duct metal. Go to lowe's and get a small section of gas water heater vent pipe and some stainless steel hose clamps the correct diameter to hold on the patches. Ride while you are looking for a deal on some mufflers.

I just might do that for the next week while I find a set.
Do you think 2005 Fat Boy mufflers would work? They look just like the sportster mufflers do. The diameter might be bigger though who knows.
I just saw some on CL here in san diego. They're fairly priced.

I have a set of screaming eagle II mufflers on mine. Gonna post pics tomorrow in my project thread. Sounds decent. Quiet, but good tone.

    HI,

I have an '82 XJ Maxim 750 YICS...

I bought Sportie mufflers year unknown that had the baffle centers drilled out on ebay for $40 incl. frt.

My mechanic took my old mufflers - unwelded the brackets, ground off the brackets on the Sportie mufflers, and re-welded the old brackets on them.

Result...looks like factory, sound great and no re-jet required. That being said, new intake boots and new needle & seat kits were also done.

Need to take pics I guess...

    Good luck...

    Regards,

    PY

Here is another search possibility if you didn't know about it. It is a nationwide search engine for craigslist. I typed in sportster mufflers and seen a pair for $30
