One coil fires the inner pair of cylinders (2 and3), and the the other coil supplies spark to the outer two (1 and 4). If the coils' primary wiring is correct, the 2/3 coil's spark plug leads should be a little shorter than the other coil's pair going to the outer cylinders.

These bikes' spark plug leads had a small white label on each plug wire to indicate where they go; you may still have one or two of them still there to help you out.

The exhaust explosions are what happens when the spark's 180 degrees off.

Cylinders are numbered from left to right as you sit on the bike. So the cylinder on the left (or as a car would go the driver's side) is #1. Coils are normally set up for the left coil to fire cylinders 1 & 4 and the right coil fires 2 & 3.

After I had mothballed mine, and then the weather got real nice so I decided to ride it again, I had a similar problem.

In my case it was because I forgot I had detatched the cable to the enrichner mechanism. Apparently a mixture that is too lean to ignite in the engine will accumulate in the exhaust system and make one hell of a bang. You might have a look to make sure yours works.

Pretty sure he's talking about the choke. Just follow the cable from the left handlebar.

Yeah, could they make it any more confusing? It's marked as "choke" on the handlebar controls, it's actually a fuel enrichment, and the cable that runs to it is listed as a "starter cable". Yeesh.
