Geez Schooter. Talk about pi$$ing in a dudes Cheerios! I bet that Ford would pull your bike out of the ditch! Probably your Grand Prix at the same time!

I had an '84 OR '86 3/4 ton F250 with a 6.9L after-market ATS turbo charged diesel. Best truck I ever owned. I bought it used and put over 150 K miles on it and never had a problem. EverYone knows that Ford trucks rule and Chevy and Dodge drool! 8O

The one I bought has more power than the chevy and the dodges I test drove. It's on 38's and has been regeared so maybe thay makes the difference. It's primary job will be daily driver when I don't ride and the only thing it'll haul on a semi-regular basis is my Jeep.

congrats you bought one of the best trucks ever built.

i have been a 7.3 enthusiast since i had my first 97. my current one is still running fantastic, but the rest of the truck with 250,000 miles is starting to rot through, and needs some work. its dyno'd at 390rwhp and its been 100% reliable. for 200,000 miles it has had a gooseneck hitch and towed horses or race machines all over the eastern half of the country.

i am an OBS (old body style) guy at heart, i really want to restore my 97 and run it forever but time and money arent on my side so i actually just bought a 2003 King Ranch crew cab long bed 4x4 with the 6.0. i was hoping to get another 7.3 but the price on the truck i got was too good to pass up and i was having trouble finding a low miles rust free 7.3.

do you know if it is a early 99 or a late 99? if its a late 99 you have a better turbo and transmission.

a lot of good tech and aftermarket mod info on these forums:
    http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums
    http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/index.php
stay away from thedieselstop, there is a lot of BAD info there and everybody likes to make more power with nitrous and propane. they are the ricers of the diesel forums.

what configuration is your truck? what are the stats? do you have any plans to modify it?

It's a crew cab short bed single wheel. Don't know about the early/late 99 I'll check on that when I get home.

It's already lifted and has a hypertech tuner installed. I have the tuner it came with the truck. Don't think I'll be modifing too much. It's getting new wheels and tires here in a week or so.

The mechanic that's going to do my state inspection says the 6.0's blow injector orings. So maybe watch for that.

I was looking at this too: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1868297035.html

But with it not running I had no way to get it home or a place to keep it.

that is a nice truck, and any diesel truck is better than any gas truck, BUT

i do not think the powerjoke is the best, we have a pretty big circuit of diesel truck pullers where i live, they're "street legal" but they're trailer queens. NO ONE pulls a real ford, It's all Cummins or Duramax there is ONE ford, with a cummins diesel. There used to be a guy pulling like a 97 or so body style, and his frame would flex so badly, and he never got nearly as far. any diesel could last 250K miles, and horsepower isn't what you're looking for out of a truck it's torque, and the cummins inline six knows how to do that, duramax is ok, while i wouldnt be seen driving a doge gas truck, i'd choose the cummins over the duramax even though im a chevy guy.

though, to be honest, if i had an infinite budget, detroit diesels hold a sweet spot in my heart, and I would love to toss one in a chevy. we just hauled a pretty freshly rebuilt gmc truck to the scrap yard, we shoulda kept the motor

rant off, enjoy your truck, and congrats on the nice buy

    ok schooter....

here is the TOP DOG on the pulling circuit for a while now, and its a 7.3 stock block, stock crank, forged rods, turning 7000rpms.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv7TMgEr53o

also, torque is nothing without any rpm behind it. rpms with gearing will make up for any "lack" of torque. just think about a formula engine.

as far as any diesel going 250k, for the 8 years i was at the diesel shop i would have to say the cummins shortblock can do it but the injection system cannot. ESPECIALLY the VP44 pumps. The HEUI injection on the 7.3 is extremely reliable, most trucks on the road still have the original pump and injectors. the 6.0 and cat C7 have some injector issues but the updated ones are much better. alliant started teflon coating things to prevent stiction and it seems to be working.

schooter i always wanted to put a 12v71 under the hood of a long nose KW. they scream!

If you guys on the east coast need straight rust free vehicles you just need to expand your pursuit to the left coast. I Oregon and Washington it is ILLEGAL to put salt on the roads. They can only use fertilizer and only sparingly at that.

As such you NEVER see a rotted out car body unless you live in one of the coastal towns. A local 40's 50's 60's 70's etc car will be absolutely rust free and perfect for restoring.

I just wish I had enough space to rebuild an old ride.

As classics go my mom still lives in Arizona. Dry, no snow/ice for salting, you can pull one out of a scrap yard and redo it.

I checked the door sticker built 06/99 So that's got to be a late 99 damn near a 00.

Anyway I put it to work today. We're redoing closets at the house. Took all the old wall remains to the dump.

We have been looking in AZ, around Holbrook area. They actually have seasons however no salt, that's why all of the airplane boneyards are in AZ.

i just bought my truck from a gentleman who moved here from Florida! i was searching nationwide, but apparently there are no 4x4's for sale outside the north east. i know a guy who bought a 79 f-250 from AZ, it was sun bleached worse than anything i had seen and the plastic bits were UV rotted, but the metal was still like new.

You can't have every thing. I was getting tired of explaining to people around here why I had a carpet dash mat on my car. To keep it from baking in the sun for those who don't know.

    Nice truck Zook.

    Mine's "street legal" now too.

Got perm stickers on it Thursday. It's new wheels came today. Once they're mounted I'll add a pic. Got some black ones. 16.5x9.75 to run 37" hummer take offs which I already have.

So the wheels in the previous pictures are for sale. they're 16.5x14 with a 8x170 pattern. I'll post a for sale ad.

The 7.3 you have will dominate and chevy or dodge for the same years. with some parts to free the engine up (Chip, propane, exhaust, intake, better intercooler) You will out pull just about any newer truck also. That 7.3L is a monster so good buy. A buddy here in Orlando is running high 11's with his single cab his videos are on youtube. he drive it everyday (On a different map of course).

But ignore the bashing. You will always have a mullet rocking chevy guy, Or a dodge stranded needing your Fords help talking trash.

    I dont have a Mullet

and I seriously doubt a powerjoke could out pull a cummins, no matter which series, it may be faster, because it is a higher reving motor

Everybody makes fun of rednecks, until their car breaks down, then everyone likes a redneck...

Going into my truck search I had no previous loyalties. I still don't. I'm enjoying this one though.

Trucks are like bikes most people like one, dislike another and unless you're making the payments your opinion don't count. <- not aimed at anyone.

heres my 99 (july) with the 7.3...

i out pulled my friends 92 one ton with the cummins 12v. we put a 20,000lb tow strap receiver hitch to receiver hitch. he couldnt move me at all and i was only turning about 1,700rpm. he was as wound up as he dared go...

long box, crewcab, 4x4, 7,500lb wet...

the cummins is a good engine but the truck doesnt last nearly long enough...

the duramax had a serious issue with blown head gaskets because of the aluminum heads they used on the block to keep the weight down enough to keep running an IFS. sometimes they would get a whole 35-40 thou on them before they needed work. my cousin worked for the GM dealer in Cass City and he spent A LOT of time ordering the repair parts for this...

the ford i found didnt lead in any one category but in averaged ratings was the best out there...

275,000 miles (+/-) and still running almost 19mpg REGULARLY during the summer months when i stay out of four-wheel drive...

XLE4 was the best flash code for these early trucks...

yours is a 99-1/2. the early 99s had the powerstroke badge on the fender by the turnsignal. the 1/2s got the badge on the door...

Everyone has their favorites. But to be honest, in the stock form the motor is so hindered, you dont get the real truck no matter manufacture, so if you want to really feel the oomph of a turbo deisel get mods. On the other hand enjoy your new toy. And not hating on rednecks, But its true when you hear the Ford bashing theres a guy with a boe tie tatoo not to far away lol.

Screw global warning!! lol We ride our bikes to save a bit. I'll rather drive a f350 then buy a prius or smart car.

But is'nt that the american way? Better, Bigger, Badder, Louder?

Better to make one trip in a big truck than 5 trips to haul the same thing in my jeep which gets about the same MPG.

And by buying used the engery to built it was already spent.

wow look at the hate coming in from australia!

would you suggest i tow my gooseneck horse trailer or haul lumber with my xj??? what else can tow 10,000lbs down the highway and still get 14+ mpg (6+ kpl)??? i know its fashionable to bash The United States of America, but watch what you choose to poke fun at because you guys really arent known for having any great fuel efficient vehicles over there, in fact your emissions standards are much more lax than here in the USA.

wizard, your comment about us not being worried about gas prices or global warming.....we ARE worried and thats why we bought the diesels. more power with less fuel, less energy to make our fuel, MUCH less ozone depleting emissions than an XJ in new condition.

i have to ask, what do you australians have to offer that can haul 4 horses, 4 people, and safely go 75mph down the road while getting better economy than these diesel trucks (ford, chevy or dodge)??? what vehicle is out there that i can use to more efficiently bring 3000lbs of grain to an animal rescue IN ONE TRIP like i did a week ago?

ya wiz, diesel is the way to go, you try doin what a diesel can with a gaser, you're getting 3 mpg.

and with mods (exhaust, filter, chip) it only gets better, my friends cummins with cruise unloaded at 24 mpg all day

plus, with upcoming tier 4 emmisions for diesel tractors, the air coming out of the tractor has to be cleaner than the air coming in.

diesel is a clean efficient technology, especially with bio fuels, your truck or car will smell like french frys

not to mention, dodge is coming out with a smaller diesel for their 1500 trucks, so hillrods dont need to get such a large truck, and can be more efficient.

not to mention, alot of diesel trucks, around here, the engines last longer than the body

first, no. i use diesel not gas. lol.....

second, no. i dont worry about unproven theories...

like has been said, the diesel is a much more efficient powerplant under load than that of petrol. not everything can be hauled in a 4-banger econobox, besides i like the ride and the room. being 22 feet long it rides better than a lot of cadillacs and on par with my 1968 lincoln...

I bet that's a bitch to find a car park, Lt.
I'm only pulling your chain, guys, I don't believe in man made climate change, in fact I think it's arrogant to think we can effect anything much.
Back in the day I did have the K5 Blazer, with the 350 V8, if I need to haul stuff I use a truck, keep business & pleasure separate.

its a pain at the airport because it JUST BARELY fits in the parking garage there. i cant hit the speed bumps over 2mph because i want to make sure i dont 'top out' on the ceiling...

Thought I owe my thread an update.

Finally got the new wheels and tires on. Tires are now 37x12.50R16.5 military humvee take offs. Had a heck of a time finding the 16.5's in an 8x170 bolt pattern.

    Anyway here you go:

And the computer mileage says it went up 3mpg!

I've got the balance beads in these. I was skeptical but no vibes all the way upto 80mph which is plenty fast enough for a truck this big in traffic.

That's what I read. So far so good. Can't speak to the wear part but they ride pretty nice. They whine but what real truck tire doesn't. I just turn the radio up!

Anybody seen the glacier trucks they build in Iceland? I saw a f350 on a website had 54x19.50!
