I just recently got my 82 xj650j running(2 weeks ago). heres what i did to it. new tires, battery, rebuilt master cylinder, new rear brake shoes, cleaned out gas tank (rusty) cleaned/rebuilt carbs. the other day i took off the turn signals...anyhow, shes been runnin good until tonight...took it out for a ride...got some open road and opened it up...took it up to about 11k thru first 3 gears....after that, she wanted to stall and the only way it would stay running was from the forward inertia...got home and the bike died when i clutched in and wouldnt start back up...any ideas?

A few more questions will help narrow down the field. Did the electrical system still function? Have you checked for fuel in the carb bowls? Make sure the fuel petcock is in the correct position (this assumes you might have changed out the stock unit for something else). Make sure the airbox is not plugged (strange question but it has happened).

i should have mentioned that the bike was turning over, just not starting....lights were still working, fuel in bowls, airbox is good.

That helps. It sounds electrical in nature. Did you check for spark?

You didn't accidently trip the kill switch did you? I did this once on the freeway and it scared the... well, the heck out of me. Dark is better for spark check anyway. Pull the plugs out, stuff them back in the boots, ground the plugs against the valve cover, spin the motor over and watch the sparks dance.

    You know, ....

YOU wouldn't be the first guy to run out of gas and think there's something dreadfully wrong with the Bike.

Grab a flashlight and peek inside the Tank.
If the Tank is empty, ...
It's OK ti lie and say you were in just the right locale for sun spot activity to cause and electromagnetic pulse that rendered you In-Op for a moment.

I bought a Corvair convertible once for $75 because it wouldn't run. Re-gapped the points with a matchbook in the seller's driveway and drove it home. Sold it a month later for $350. (Sorry, not a bike.)

If it didn't run out of gas, it sounds like you may have pulled a bunch of crud into the carbs with your high-speed, high fuel-flow run. I didn't see "installed inline fuel filter" in the list of things you've completed.

    OK,...

Make sure that Gas is actually passing through the Filter. √

    Pull Main Fuse.
    Turn ON Ignition Switch.
Replace Fuse. Listen for Relay. √

you like hearing about the ninja.

the suzuki intruder i have now sat in the guys garage cuz he spent the last 10 years thinking it was starving for fuel and rejetted the carbs and some other crap. it never occured to him the cylinder wasn't firing at all. clipped the plug wire and put her back together. she's good enough to ride untill winter when i'll undo his damage and hopefully get it to idle and stop backfiring in one cylinder.

she's a good rider but she don't like moutainous twisties at all.

the fuel flow was very slow, so i put in a new filter and that solved my problem....after revving high for 3 gears it used all the fuel in the bowls and it was not flowing fast enough to refill them...when i checked for fuel in the bowls a little time had passed so they were full again. anyways shes runnin good again!
