Hello all! So I just bought my first motorcycle and have a few questions about it as I have no knowledge. I did order a manual but im waiting for it in the mail. My bike is a 1981 xj 650 lh which is the midnight maxim. Oh it has 36,000 miles and i live in southern California.
1). How much and what kind of oil do i put in it/ where can i get the filter?
2). the bike rides good but randomly it will die at a light and it wont start up again right away. any ideas of why?

well thats it for now, im sure i will be asking and talking about my bike with you guys in the future.

    Thanks for the help!

I believe stock filters are still common enough for autostores (or Amazon).

Oil amount in cc is listed on engine near fill hole.

Being a new rider are you popping the clutch and killing it or is it actually dying?

The absolutely FIRST thing you need to do is STOP RIDING the bike until you check the rear brake shoes for signs of delamination: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Oil filter=FRAM CH6003 it comes with the o-rings.

MOTORCYCLE oil, 20W40 or 20W50 but avoid "car" oil as they are increasingly "friction modified" and can cause clutch issues.

Amount of oil=the capacity cast into the clutch cover +200CCs.

Clutch could be dragging and stalling the motor OR you gots carb issues (not at all uncommon.)

To take off, check brakes and replace rear wheel requires a few NEW cotter pins and less than 30 min assuming the nut is not frozen on.

Take note/picture of how the brake actuator arm is situated if you happen to take it off like I did (DOH).

FYI: That brake dust probably has asbestos in it, so don't blow it it (like i did... GRRR).
