Headers on my 83 XJ750 Maxim are rusted to the point I want to replace them. Will the headers off an 81 XJ750 Maxim fit my bike?

Confirm TIMEtoRIDE +1, swap away and DO check that rear brake.

Thanks for the replies. Do you have any suggestions on parts sites? I've come across bikebandit and oldbikebarn, but they don't seem to have a vary large selection. Where's a good place to get those exhaust donuts at?

Our friendly, neighborhood Chacal has almost all the spare, new, hard to find parts. Look at the top right of your screen (scroll).

Other parts can be had in the buy/sell section, or on E-Bay.

So I finally got around to pulling my old header pipes off and put the new ones on that I bought some 5 months ago. Bought new header gaskets as advised, only to find out that the pipes do not fit. They apparently came off an 81 XJ750, and I was going to put them on my 83 XJ750 (midnight maxim, I think it's xj750mk but I don't know if that's the right code), but they aren't quite long enough. They curve before they reach low enough to go into the collector. The posters above me say that they would have fit, but apparently they don't. Is it possible that these are Seca pipes instead of Maxims, do the models have different pipes? Looking around I managed to find a site with diagrams of parts, and the part numbers are slightly different between years.

    83 XJ750MK

    1 SKU: 22N-14611-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST L

    2 SKU: 22N-14621-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST R

    3 SKU: 22N-14631-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST 3

    4 SKU: 22N-14641-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST 4

    81 XJ750RH

    1 SKU: 5G2-14611-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST L

    2 SKU: 5G2-14621-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST R

    3 SKU: 5G2-14631-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST 3

    4 SKU: 5G2-14641-00-00
    PIPE, EXHAUST 4

It looks as though the regular 83 XJ750 has the same part number as the 81 XJ750RH. The pipes I bought were chrome, and the ones that are on mine look to be black. Since most of the part number is the same between the two, I thought the first 3 digits were just the difference between chrome and black. I'm more of a fan of the chrome than the black, but is there more to these part numbers than what I'm figuring? There's no mistake that these pipes don't line up. I tried each pipe in each header slot to see what matches, the end of the header pipe on the collector side sits just above the collector hole on each one when I try to line them up, a good inch short or so. The pipes themselves don't look to have any identifying marks other than G1, G2, G3, and G4 stamped on them where they bolt to the head at. The ends that go into the collector are shorter than the ones that were on there too, about an inch or so. Everyone above me seems to think this was a even swap and they look to know what they're talking about, so what's the deal here?

XJ750RH is a Seca. XJ750MK is a Midnight Maxim... I suspect Seca pipes won't work on the Maxim since the exhaust is a tad different... 750 Maxims didn't appear till '82 :(

It didn't specify when I bought the pipes, just said 81 XJ750, guess they were from a Seca. So the only 750 in 81 was a Seca?

Don't worry brother, you can just sell them off in Ebay again.

Or you can do my temporary fix while I was waiting for "new" used headers.

Take your measurements. Buy a steel plate, about 1mm thick. Cut out a nice bit of the plate to suit your measurements and roll it around the headers to reach into the collector box. Seal with exhaust paste.
