:x :x Took my little Turbo out for a run, while riding she started to keep dropping power, then when I stopped she cut out, to restart was not easy as I had to try and almost keep the throttle wide open while pushing the start button.
Got her running again got back home. :) Following day went to see if I could sort out the start problem, funny thing was she strted 1st time but   where the little hole is (to let out water in exhaust, loads of oil was being pumped out with a water feel to it.
Now big problem is have been told here in good old UK by 1 guy it will cost 2-3 times more then the bike is worth to fix. That is if anyone will do it.
He says that a piston has gone and oil is being pushed that way?
Would like to add he has not seen it nor heard it.

I do not want to just scrap the bike I have worked on it all Summer, the oil is being pushed out a fair bit so it is not a drip more of a little stream.  I thought it may have been a gasket gone. Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks

Don't even think of scrappin that bike. It is beautiful. May just be a blown head gasket. Look for water mixed with the oil in the crankcase. Could be a bad piston or rings. Could you have added too much oil? Any way you look at it, that bike is worth saving. I am bringing my 550 Seca back to life after it was stolen, stripped and beat with a sledgehammer by the thief. Your problem would have been a walk in the park.

I thought the 650 turbo was a air cooled engine, I don't see a radiator in the pics. Where did water come from?
I suspect the turbo is leaking oil into the exhaust. Run a compression test to check the cylinders.
Thats a beautifull XJ turbo, don't you dare part it out.

Yes it is air cooled, the water I think is condensation and the hole is there so it does not sit and rust the pipe (I think ).

Not being great on the engine side of things will make sorting the problem myself not easy. Here in the UK am finding that no one wants to touch it (they have all the tools etc I don't.)

Wish 1 of you lads where over here right now.
    Thanks for the replies

Did you smell the stuff coming from the pipe?

It may have just had a carb get stuck wide open and is flooding the motor with fuel...which will exit in the form of sooty leakage like you describe, and make you have to throttle it to start or keep it running...

If it smells like fuel, it may be just a tragic carb glitch.

If you crack or hole a piston, it'll push a ton of oil through the PCV system and into the airbox. Take a look. If there'[s oil pooled in there and the filter is soaked, then yeah, you've got a massive internal damage problem, most likely.

Yeah I forgot turbo seals can blow and fog the exhaust with oil...but it's so hot there, it ends up looking like a mosquito fogger...TONS of blue/white oil smoke when you accelerate, every engine I've ever seen with a blown turbo oil seal...but that's cars and diesel trucks...I'd assume it would be the same in a bike though.

I vote float issue filling the crankcase with gas, hence the "watered down" oil that's being pumped out.

I would immediately confirm that the sump is not full of gasoline.

check the float levels in the carbs, check the turbo's shaft play, check engine compression.

You're looking for flooding carbs, blow turbo, bad piston rings, or a bad valve (intake or exhaust valve in a cylinder).

I echo the possibility of gas in the oil. When I first got my XJ650 I left the petcock in the PRI position and the carbs were in terrible shape & when I started the bike the next day oil/gas was pouring from the relief tube and the crankcase was filled with this mix.

Rebuilding the petcock and overhauling the carb fixed the problem (and draining & twice replacing the oil) fixed it.

Smell the watery oil & see if it has a petrol smell to it.

    Good luck!

:) THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES LADS  Will now have to get hold of turbo manual and try and fix the problem myself   Could be fun lets hope that I do not have extra nut and bolts left afterwards

Also hope the nuts and bolts will undo after 28 years.

Penatrating oil is your best friend, soak it and let it sit.
