as the title suggests, this is the start of my xj project.ive called it a chobobber because it will b a lil bit chopped and a lil bit bobbed.but........i aint a welder/fitter/technician or anything of the like in any way shape or form.im a lorry driver, and before that, was a pig farmer.....so in all likelyhood this will end up as nothing more than 'fit for the scrap heap'.but u dont know if u dont try.im trying to do as much as i can to it myself.as i say,im no welder tho,so i tack it with my tatty old stik welder n get bloke from work to mig it up proply.i have no jig or anything like that,so everything gets 'tacked' (and i use that term very loosely....just like the tack incidently) by eye.so as u can tell,im probly guna end up with a wibbly wobbly winky wonky banana shaped thing that homer simpson wd b proud of building.anyway here goes try number umpteen to get a pic of how the bike came to me.........

    hope it worked.........

the next 2 pics are of the 2 braceing pieces of the frame downtubes to the backbone......they had to go to make way for my xs650 tank.[IMG][IMG]

the next pic is the seat part of the frame removed, ive taken this off to lower it at the back to give it a bit of a chopper stance.
    [IMG][IMG]
i had to halve the thickness of the backbone tubes to allow the xs tank to drop over the frame.so i cut some pieces of tubing to brace between the rails to beef them up a bit.u cant see the tubes halved coz the photos i had of them have gone.so they are still whole in pics for now.[IMG][IMG][IMG]
i am yet to sort the mounting of the seat part of the frame.it will probly have a tube run across the frame in front of the back tyre, around halfway up.then the front part of the seat base will mount roughly where it was,the rear will drop down and sit on the cross piece.

    yippee photos.lol

We got a proper mix of these XJs going. Fighters, chobobs ,cafes at least we can let each other know what doesnt work.
Should make for an interesting ride out when we're all sorted.

Keep up the good work and keep the photos coming.

ok,to finally bring you up to date with where i have got too.
this is what i mean by lowering the seat at the rear[IMG][IMG]
i seem to have a few pictures of progress missing,so i will have to skip now to a couple of pics of the frame with running gear attached, and the xs tank sat aboard the frame to give u some idea of how it is hopefully going to sit when it is all done.....
    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
that i am afraid,is as far as i have got so far.there may be more plans for the future, such as a set of cb900 forks for a bit of extra length and more ride height atr the front.but for now i just want to get the frame sorted, slap what i need to back on n see how it goes.
let me know what you think so far.any hints/tips/ideas greatfully recieved.critisism also welcome as i may look at something and think its ok,but really its cack.so feel free to say what u really think, not what u think i want to hear.

one more thing........the front barces that were lopped of will be going back on the bike, just not how they were.they wont fit with the xs tanks tunnel being so narrow.but there will be bracing.i have got a set of 750 suzuki katana shock absorbers on their way to me,i have no idea how they will look,or if they will allow the rear of the frame to sit how i want it too.they are a bit of a gamble, but if they dont fit/work,i will save them for my cb900 project.if this is the case i will probably seriously consider hardtailing the frame.this will probably just involve a few bits of tubing welded from frame to swingarm rather than buying a full on hardtail kit.tho that isnt set in stone......watch this space.

note the piviot point has been welded... so the swing part doesnt swing.. I first got in in the right position then tac'd it into possition.. remember the drive shaft has to line up

Then there is two supports going to the upper part of the frame.. and one that goes down towards the back for extra strength.. maybe went over board on the strentgh of it.. but it needed it..

Anyway not going to mess about on these roads here.. so the more strenght you give it the better...

    good luck.
