    Hopefully you guys will tell me of some more reasonable way to fix this.

    That head is all chewed up...been hammering a 6 sided 7/16" socket onto it for years to change the filter, but every time I swear it's gonna be the last go-round for that bolt. One of these days it will become impossible to remove, it seems.

    I thought I looked it up once before and was like $62 or something. FAT CHANCE!

    If the cover was steel, I'd weld something to it for a better grip. I doubt a brazed nut would be strong enough though....

    From Yamaha maybe, although that sounds steep, maybe Bike Bandit.

    from chacal's catalog:

    HCP1067 OEM oil filter PRESSURE RELIEF BYPASS VALVE & COVER MOUNTING BOLT, bright plated finish, small 12mm head, for all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900RK models. NOTE: All Midnight Maxim and XJ900RK models used this bolt, but it had a black finish on the head.
    $ 37.95

    HCP270 Aftermarket oil filter PRESSURE RELIEF BYPASS VALVE & COVER MOUNTING BOLT, bright plated finish, large 17mm head, fits all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900RK models. NOTE: All Midnight Maxim and XJ900RK models used this bolt, but it had a black finish on the head.
    $ 14.95

    I recommend the aftermarket one with the larger head. The torque spec is cast into the cover, by the way: 1.5Kg-m which is only 11 ft/lbs.

    Really not bad prices. You can occasionally find one on eBay as well. Good luck!

    There's a bunch of them on ebay, but if you have some time and little coin...file the bolt head flat during your next change. File all sides to square them off...maybe to a 1/4 sized bolt...should get you another 5 oil changes...and try to keep the hammer in the toolbox. :wink:
