Then you may as well go ahead and break the rack, and get the carbs all the way apart for the dipping.

Recommended method for removing the peened-over ends of the butterfly screws is with a small file rather than taking a chance with a Dremel in there.

Along with breaking the rack apart like Rick said you should also remove all the jets and emulsion tubes for cleaning. Don't forget to replace the O-ring in the needle seat.

You have to pull the butterflies if your changing the throttle shaft seals. There is no way to change one side because the way the shafts are made.

They seem to be in good shape, i am going to leave them as is, i did not soak them long enough to do any damage to them.

Hopefully. If you develop a "mystery" vacuum leak or rising idle or high-rpm stumble once everything is back together and properly tuned, then you may need to go back in and change them. That bike doesn't have enough miles on it for them to be worn out, but they could be dried out and split in which case they would have had to have been replaced anyway.

Break th rack ..do it once do it right, stay organised with all th parts and rule th carbs out as a source of any near future problems. Tons of info on here what to do. Some one on here recently referred to th carbs as "being the heart of the bike"...problems with th carbs comes up on here SO OFTEN. They are a must do for for a 29 year old bike that may/may not have had them done b4

Bushy, the lucky SOB stumbled across a bike with 1500 miles on it. NO WAY are they worn out. If they weren't dried out and split, and the Berryman's bath didn't kill them, he's good to go for a while yet.

    IF.

I sure as heck won't pull butterflies apart until I have to; I'm not going to tell somebody else to do it preventively. Although it's a gamble now for sure...

I've removed the peened screws on a few sets of carbs successfully using a steady hand and a Dremel tool. Mind you this is NOT one of my favorite things to do and my hand isn't anywhere near as steady as it was once upon a time but if you have the wherewithal, do the miserable deed and be done with it, correctly. Good luck on that overhaul.

Hey thanks for all the info and suggestions, I can not wait to get this bike road ready, i have rode it already in poor shape and i loved it, This is my second cruiser, my first one was a early 80's honda 750, I hit a board that i did not see in a puddle and i wrecked the bike, when it went over i felt all this heat and i was off that bike faster then flies on crap, here the tank split and somehow ignited from the spark plug area, i lost the bike in a huge fire. melted the carbs, burned all the wires. This XJ is going to be my baby and very well taken care of.
