Hey everyone, how's it going? (sorry I don't own an XJ) I'm new to the forum but not to motorcycles. I've joined to help a friend with a 1985 XJ700 Maxim he was given. Its been sitting a while and needs a lot of TLC. I'm really impressed with the amount of information you've got here, particularly on the Carbs. That's going to be good for getting them back together. The bikes got about 30K on the odometer. Tank is really rusty on the inside. Here's a couple of shot of it. Anyway, I may be popping in on occasion to look around.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll have to look up Chacal, I'm sure there are things we're going to be needing. To start with the O rings on the fuel tubes between the carbs. There really dried out and coming apart. We've pulled the carbs apart and spent the day cleaning them. I've read the 35 page post on cleaning them, great info. We'll be putting that knowledge to work real soon.

Rough being the operative word. Looks a lot like my 650 Seca. Luckily, aluminum won't rust.

You've certainly come to the right place, and we won't hold it against you for riding RED bikes.

For the stuff chacal doesn't have, eBay will be your new best friend.

Get the valve clearances checked right away, run a compression test to be sure you're not peeing into the wind, and have at those carbs. Looks like you've got a real good example there, just needs some serious work.

Glad to see it being resurrected.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. True I am partial to Red, but getting a little "Strange" every once in a while is not too bad, especially since I've got the wife permission. Not too bad eh guys...

We've got a new (used) set of forks and tripple trees coming in tomorrow from Colorado. The one here is terribly pitted with rust and I know it's going to work like a cheeze grater on the fork seals. The one from Colorado doesn't even know what moisture is...

Yea I was surprised too. It included the front brake callipers as well. I told my friend he shouldn't pass this up. They arrived on Friday. We'll start looking at doing the install this weekend.
