Has anyone relocated their choke lever elsewhere on their bike? I'm trying to figure a way to get the cable off the bars. I'm thinking maybe a 10-speed bicycle shifter lever relocated elsewhere on the frame or something. Any other ideas?

Surprise, surprise...I am working thru this right now. The solution I am attempting right now is as follows. I found a simple push/pull choke on ebay that is similar to the choke on a honda cb. I made a small L bracket that mounts just below the tank where the horn is located. I removed the horn and I am using that mounting hole even. So my choke wil be located just below my tank accessible from the left hand side. I should get that cable in the mail this week or early next week. I'll snap a pick of it assembled if you want. The 10-speed shifter is a good idea. I like the idea of using all resources available.

You are supposed to have the Enrichment Circuit Adjustment on the Handlebar because the Enrichment Circuit, when cleaned and lubed and the forks on the activating rod in sync ...

    Is adjustable.
Wide Open ... down through ... barely cracked-open.

The Enrichment Circuit isn.t just an ON~OFF situation.

You can orchestrate the amount of Enrichment needed.

Okay.... got that! But push/pull isn't any different that the thumb slider most of us have...... you should be able to set it any where from Wide open-thru-Closed.

My thinking is that it is easier on the handlebar.

I forget that some bikes are modified for nakedness.

Nakedness can be a good thing.

I would think w/o the choke right there on your bars (as is standard), you can't adjust it as needed when on the bike. For instance, when I start up on a cold morning (as we had Sunday Morning here), I had to start fully choked. I let it idle up to about 2k rpm, and then pulled it down slightly to put it back where the idle needed to be, but it was not fully closed yet. I had to put a few miles on it before I got to that. If I couldn't access the choke while riding, then what?

I never EVER ride with the choke in any position other than off. I let the bike warm up a few seconds, then she idles without it, and away I go. If I wanted everything to be as easy and simple as possible, I'd be on a stock bike.

i think one could fashion a lever to go on the left side of the choke rod it
would have to be brazed or welded on and you'd have to hold it open
but it would be clean and simple
i'am looking for some stainless now

Sitting on my frame, I can reach just about any reasonable place I might think of locating a switch or choke in this case. These frames are pretty short. I know If I was riding along and needed to adjust my choke, I could do so with my left hand.

Old thread but has anyone done this? I need to know what kind of push pull choke to get. I've also determined that a length of 25" would be ideal for mounting it where the reflectors used to be on my 81 xj650.

I ended up just not having a cable at all. I just manually hold the lever on the carbs for a few seconds with my hand. It's easily accessible and really not a problem. It easily moves through the full range from off to wide open without issue. Literally 10 seconds after starting the bike, I no longer need choke so having it accessible while riding is not a problem, although I can get to it without a problem even if I did need it.

    Tegyauto,
Im actually working through this right now on my 81 Maxim. Havent heard anything about it not working. Im trying to mount mine where the frame reflectors used to be before I cut them off (right below the tank on the neck of the frame). Ill let you know how it turns out in a few weeks. Good Luck!

I totally removed the cable assembly. On cold mornings I just hold the choke rod open for 30 seconds or so.

(and yes I know its not a choke by definition)

I do the same as kevineleven and darkfibre. Take off the cable and hold the lever on the carb for a bit and she's ready to roll.
