JUst picked up a 85 xj700x with 16,000 miles for $1K runs great I'll have to get some pics. Just wondering if anyone else here owns one and where to get parts if needed and if they have any thoughts of upgrades available. SO far I know it has bs33 mikuni carbs. can't seem to find parts. did I just buy something that i won't be able to service if something goes wrong? :?

Hi Tito & welcome to the site. What parts in particular are you looking for? there are a number of resources for parts online. It just depends on what you are looking for, discontinued parts can be acquired on ebay as well as good used parts. I to need to post some pics of my bike as well, look forward to seeing some pics & helping with whatever I can

Hey MAX-X, was looking for some carb parts or just a whole set. YA, I just saw some go for over 150 on ebay. Amazing cause the guy was asking 50 for them on an earlier posts, but good for him considering he picked 'em up for almost half that. I've seen lots of places that have carb parts for the hitachi carbs but not much for the mikuni bs 33's. Guess there's always slapping some silcone on the old boots and slide seals to keep them fresh. The guy I bought this bike from didn't mention a massive amount of something like silicone painted in black that made up the right side lower crank case. (missing screw towards lower front carnk case cover). Fraid to remove it. She still runs like a hooker on crack. Any way wondering what's behind that cover and thinking about molding/replacing this silicone with JB weld. What up MAX? What do you have? Are you and i the only water cooled muchachos in here? East cost bandits. Ride Or Die!!! LOL. Oh ya does the regular xj700 air filter fit the XJ700X?

Hey there Tito and welcome aboard. I have an 86 maxim X. Well, let me just put it this way; You purchased one of motorcylings all time best bikes. Too bad Yamaha didn't hype it up a bit more in those short two years of production. Key words being "two years". Parts are scarce but not extinct. Follqw ebay-motors and you'll sooner or later stumble on what you need. I noticed just this past weekend their were some maxim X carbs for sale on e-bay. With a bike like the maxim X, you be better off to find a complete parts bike. Some parts are interchangeable with the maxim Xs air cooled brother such as; all body panels will cross over, seat, headlight, tank, headers and mufflers, handle bars, forks, breaks, rims and so on... I found Harold Phiefers site http://www.skylinc.net/~hap/maxim-x/ to be very helpful and a truely dedicated site to the Maxim X. Also, http://yamahapart.com/ can be truely helpful with oem parts for our bikes and will show you diagrams of parts that are still available and dicontinued and provide you with part #s so you can order right on site. Well, I hope I didnt discourage you. These bikes are awesome and under appreciated. Thorough maintenance is the best prevention of future problems. If you ever want to get a ride going on the east coast, let me know! Oh yeah... dont forget to post those pics!

Thanks Rob, Went to the link you sent me. Seems although I have an 85 VIN (1AA), Most of my bike seems to be 86
"while the XS ('86) model has an elongated oval Yamaha text emblem on the gas tank. while the XS ('86) model test circuit tests both the oil pressure light and the fuel level light. On the XS ('86) model, the oil pump covers are only partially unpainted and the recessed areas in the covers are painted black."

I like the tuning fork emblem cooler. Think my engine is an 86?
Oh well guess I'll have to dig deeper to truely see what I have. Guess A VIN is just like a Quote from Revenge of the Nerds. "What if DOG really spelled cat?"....
Or simpler yet cant jugde a book by its cover. Aw heck I dunno.

Just dawned on me that the heavily siliconed part i was talking about was thr oil pump cover. If I take this off will oil come flying out?
I'll get pics on saterday if it's not raining. PA weather is nuts 8O !!

I do know there are lots of people out there parting out x's on fleabay.

I own an 1985 X and surprisingly you can still get a fair amount of oem parts yet. I bought spare parts for mine on ebay. I got a cooling fan for 10 dollars,if I remember right they are like $300-400 new. another good thing to try to find would be an igniter box, just in case you'd need it,they aren't cheap either!

hey there tito, glad you liked the links I left you. Man what was the previous owner thinking putting that clear silicon under that cover? You shouldnt have any problem taking that cover off. Oil wont squirt all over you. You may want to put a pan under it to catch the oil that is going to spill out. I cant wait to see those pics!
