hi i just started a project bike it is a 85 maxim xj 750. but i have a few questions about things like how i can made a set of forward controls and how pod filter will affect my bike and if need to have the carbs synced. i would really be thankful for any help that i can get.
i don't have a photo yet because i have already started cutting it up. i'll post some soon.

You might do a search about the forward controls (doubt there's a complete how-to). There's a RAGING (always) debate going on now on the General Forum about pods. Really, cleaning and syncing carbs is one of the first things probably. After, checking rear brakes...

BTW REAL good how-to's for cleaning and syncing on the XJ FAQ SUGGESTIONS forum

Check out thechopperunderground those guys over there have a load of talent and info on bobbing bikes. And don't get the guys on here started on pods you'll have better luck over there to many stock purist here. Over there chopping bikes up is not only welcomed its required.

Welcome to the world. I too had to be converted. But pods are coming and the chopping has begun.

Here is my single best piece of advice....

It's yours make it however you want. If you like stock, cool they look awesome. If you want to go all out wild, cool they look awesome. You can't go wrong liking what you ride and you wont ride what you don't like.

do it the way you want to make it your own. but first thing you say its an 85 xj750 is it water cooled or air cooled if its water cooled its not a us model if its air cooled its not us model either if its air cooled are you sure its not an 84 or earlier they are different. if they are us models they are 700s just trying to get it stright that way you wont get the wrong information . Most people put where they are from and year and size in their signature line just trying to help

Good job so far... looking forward to watching your progress on the build. Personally though, I'd trim that seat down some more, it looks too big for the bike in my opinion.

    Cheers

get the valves in spec first. You'll never get it to run right if they are not within spec. Yes, do the valves BEFORE you sync the carbs.

as i suspected thats an older around an 81 maxim 750 it will be stamped on the steering head match the vin to the title. so be carefull when you look up the specs for the valves they might be the same as a 700 but im not sure here are the differences in the way they look. I just dont want you to get in trouble god forbid if you ever get in a wreck and the vin # are different or you get a wise guy cop stop you and check the vin Best of luck with the build

looks like you're off to a good start.

i'd trim the seam down as mentioned and look into some different turn signals that dont stick out quite as far as the stockers.

    all in all, nice bike!

Ya, the rear turn signals are a bit out of place for that bike. Smaller signals will look alot better, but will not be as effective being seen, so be careful with after market "mini" signals. Some are not very bright for daytime use.
Forward controls are not all that hard to fabricate. You must first make brackets to the foot controls coming off of the front motor mount of the bolts where your engine guards are mounted. This will give you a starting point for where you want your feet. The next step is to make the shift and brake levers (pivots) which is about the hardest/time consuming part of the mod. Part of the stock levers can be used by cutting and welding (as I did) which involves some trial and error.
The controls rodes from the brake lever and shift lever canbe made out of round stock with threads cut on the ends. The shift rod can be 1/4" rod, but the brake rod needs to be 5/16" or 3/8" rod because of forced used to apply the rear brake.
Once you get everything working properly, you can remove all your parts and get it chromed or just paint them.

Another idea if you want to take the shortcut route is to find forward controls from another bike and re-work them to fit your bike. Several kinds can be found on Ebay.

Wow that bike is a mix of different year parts. The engine based on the valve cover only looks to be 84 85 the wheels are 80 to 83 the one side cover is definately 750 maxim the angle of the rear shock leads me to believe it is a 750 frame as do the shocks and gauges side reflectors in front of the gas tank which also looks to be up to 83 750 maxim. Front fender looks to be seca but the forks are maxim rear fender reminds me of the radian bike as do the rear peg muffler mounts.

i would ditch that seat for a smaller one, also i wouldnt run it without some sort of filter very long, bad for the carbs. Forward controls would help with the stance especially with those t bars you have. Other than that i think it will look great man! Make it your own. But i would def slim that seat down or just ditch it al together. IMHO.

Sorry about the delay in response but try TC Bros. for your forward controls. that is if you decide to go with them..
