I remember the cylinder heads would crack. Are you using the later style head?

I had a '78 bought new, ran almost flawlessly for 25K miles.
I rode an earlier one, didn't have the same horsepower.
Maybe it was wore out or not in tune.

I read an article a few months back that stated these bikes are about to have their moment in the sun soon, as the XS650's are all starting to command silly money as restorations, or to be chopped and bobbed into oblivion. I think the early TX's are pretty nice looking bikes. Sounds like they have quite a few issues though. My local Yamaha guy warned me off one last summer saying Yamaha tried too many things all at once with that particular model. Parts seem to be an issue too, and only a mere 40 years after they hit the market!
There is an excellent article on ADVRider where a bunch of friends get together to ride across America on a collection of very cheap motorcycles. Among them was a TX500, which had its share of failures, but was nevertheless roadside repairable, and got the guy home. The newest bike in the lot was a 750 Seca, which was a Rolls Royce compared to the rest.

EDIT: When I finally get my own place and begin to slowly turn it into a menagerie of old Japanese motorcycles, a TX will be high on the list.

Would one of these TX tanks fit an XJ? Would make a perfect Cafe tank.

Hi Orange-n-Black Re TX tank on XJ I am not sure if it would fit. There are 2 fuel taps on the TX tank and they would most likley sit up on top of the XJ
carbs as the four carbs sit out further than the 2 TX ones do. Front mounts
may be different and I know that the back ones are different.

There's always somebody on here doing a Cafe build and looking for a suitable tank. Thought maybe it would fit with little mods since its a Yamaha tank. Your TX looks good.

Hi Orange-n-Black what I will do as both of my bikes are sitting together the
TX500 and the XJ650 I will see if I can swap tanks and see if it is possible to
fit a TX500 tank onto a XJ650 should be interesting. The TX pictured in this
forum belongs to Wizard. I have not posted any pics of my bike yet.

    Wiz, I should've known. However it's not a XJ900 so I didn't think about it. LOL

Hi again Orange-n-Black Just checked re TX500 tank onto XJ650 bike and they
are completly different. Different mounts at the front and different mounts at the back also the TX tank tunnel is much too narrow. So this answeres the question of wether a TX tank will fit onto a XJ650 and it will not and I can see no way to make it fit they are just too different.

I am just waiting to get my rechromed forks back for my XJ650 later this
month. I have a film with pics of my TX on it just want to use the rest of the
film up taking pics of my finished XJ then I will post both. I am not digital
yet and I scan the developed photos into the computer and post. Hopefully
    with out too much trouble.

TX500 Yamaha Pictures check in my gallery.
