My buddy has a Virago 500 with a YICS V-twin engine in it. Will a YICS tool that I use for my XJ550 work on his 500?

Doubtful and not needed, most likely. The YICS XS "XJ" twins don't need their YICS blocked, I don't see why that would be different.

The YICS tool for the XJs was designed for a specific-configuration motor (our XJs) with a bank of 4 carbs interconnected by a straight YICS gallery.

Your buddy needs to check his service manual.

I thought the YICS tool was to be used for the synching of the carbs and then removed thereafter. Then I've heard where guys leave it in there full time to keep the YICS passageway blocked off permanently. Anyone???

Jamie; it is. The "YICS Eliminator" thing is mechanical snake oil at best. See: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29159.html for a recent horror story.

blueskyb2t; if you're referring to the correct tool for the XJ series, the answer is "probably but be careful."

Whereas chacal (XJ4Ever, see logo in banner at top right of page) carries the correct "replica" of the factory tool, for a reasonable price.
