I have a 82 XJ650RJ, with a mysterious past, that is in the process of being resurrected. The forks don't appear to be original to this bike. While the lower legs appear to be identical to other 650 Secas, the stanchion are one inch longer. Anyone know what bike these forks might be from?

Lots of possibilities without pix. Could you maybe post a couple so we know what we're dealing with?

Does the front axel bolt up to the front, middle, or rear of the leg?

He may have original lowers with Maxim tubes.

Problem solved: I think. On disassembly, I found a preload spacer that was much larger than one would expect. It was making so much preload that it was compressing the rebound spring thus making the overall length greater.
