Ok Im looking at an 82 xj 1100 that is for sale and the owner just found out that the starter will not engage to start the engine but he bought a new one and has the same problem. What is it? how hard to fix is it? and while fixing the 1st gear issue can I fix this problem? By the way the bike has just over 30,xxx miles and he wants $600 for it should I go for it and fix the problems?

Sounds like the starter clutch is out. Its not a bad job just alot of labor from what I understand. Does the owner konw if it has the second gear slip problem?

Yes low ball because you'll need to do the gear fix as well as a starter clutch. Check the XS11 site on the fix for the gears. They might have starter clutch repair also.

600 is a bit steep considering it has starter clutch and trans problems. If the bike is cosmeticly nice then no more than 400$. If it needs paint and polishing then try for 200$. Starter clutch and trans repairs do require some time and money to fix so think about that also. Don't forget about all the other things that will need attention, brakes, tires, battery, carbs, valve adjustment and so on. Doing the basics to have a safe and reliable bike could easily run to 500$ or more for all these. It would be worth it.
XS11.com has tons of informaton to fix those issues.

It has a newer front tire a barnd new rear that needs to be put on. It has a 2-3 yearold paint job that has flames. It is missing the right side cover but other wise it is really a nice bike.

I went and talked to the old owner of the bike and he came down to 500. We then took it out on the road and push started it. After it warmed up the starter clutch started working again. So I brought it home. I found out after I got home that the old owner put peak automotive oil in it. So monday Ill go get the rear tire put on and some yamalube and a new filter for it. Ill get some pics of the two girls side by side.

Peak Automotive oil... That would pique me.

Perhaps a thorough engine flush with proper oil might save the day.

Congrats on your purchase, you'll have a most fun bike when you're done.
