I have a 1981 550 seca, my rpm gage is making a loud buzzing sound. there is a screw loose, I tried taking the gage apart but the front cover will not come off and i'm afraid to break it. Any suffestions on why its making that sound, or are there any replacement tachometers that are easy to hook up. Thank guys

airborne82 it's been a while dude! Good to hear from you again.

Which "front cover" are you referring to?

The 550 Seca instument cluster comes apart quite easily, but it's kind of like an onion (or an ogre); you have to do it in layers. And it helps to know which screws to take out and which to leave in place.

If you can't fix the tach, PM me. I might have one left; I tend to go through them myself for some reason. Got a couple of nice 85mph speedos if you need one of those.

You can also drop an electronic tach from a later bike in there, I have one ready to go into my '83 but I don't have the wiring worked out yet (I want it to be plug-n-play and reversible.)

Easiest thing is to fix your tach or swap it out. I troll eBay for used 550 Seca clusters for "raw material"; they're out there all the time. Never paid more than $30 for one, and I got a couple of REALLY nice ones for like $20 or $30 each.

Ignore the crack smoking fools who think they're worth $100.
