hello all i am a new member to the site :D , up until now i have just been reading posts and trying use the info suggested by all the life time bikers to fix up my 82 xj550, i picked it up for $200 and have it parked under my porch out of the rain, i have been obsessed with trying to get it running ever since i bought it. i had to purchase a starter motor off of ebay and also a couple other bits i am still waiting on recieving. i took out the entire harness and wanted to rewire it i found the minimum wring for the xj on the site so i stuck by it and got fairly far but i do need help can someone please help me?

1.after the 10a fuse line that heads towards the dimmer sw? i dont know where to run this wire

2.on the brown wire connected to the 10a fuse when it get to the brake switch im lost

Somebody please please help me thank you so much for your time :D

"Is this an on off switch?". It's the ignition switch. When on it powers the electrical system through the brown wire and the tail light circuit. When set to (P) park it only powers the tail light. If you want to use just an on/off switch you can tie the tail light to the brown wire.

"Is this a single blue wire joining the green and yellow?" That box is the schematic form of a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch. It connects the light blue wire to either the green or yellow wire depending on which way it is toggled. It's the high/low headlight switch and is mounted on the LH handlebar control.

"What kind of switch is this?" That is a single pole single throw normally open momentary switch (SPST NO). It grounds the blue with white stripe wire to engage the starter. It's a black button on the RH handlebar control.

"Does this mean that the wire is grounded?". Yes. In some cases there isn't a wire because the ground is through the body of the device. In the case of the start button the enclosure itself is the wire.

How does the brown join the yellow/green wire. That part of the schematic can be a bit confusing. Those are two separate switches (one on the front brake lever, one on the rear brake pedal). Closing either will light the brake lamp.

Frankly, based on the questions you've asked, you're in pretty deep for your skill level. You might want to post your location and maybe there is someone close by that can help out.

Since you've got a 550, you might want to take a look here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=22927.html

The 550's clutch has some oddities about it that the big bikes don't.

No because we ride together (she rides the XJ750). And when I am working on the bikes she knows right where I am. :D

Sure. If it's a 550, then somebody's been in there before you.

    Did you look VERY closely at the 8? One of them may have had a slightly larger INSIDE diameter and you might not have have noticed;

OR somebody replaced the plate with a "normal" plate. More likely there was one with a bigger ID and you didn't see it, and the PO lost the "spring" (which is really a big wave washer.) One of my bikes was missing its clutch boss spring when I got it, but it had the special plate.

NOT really the end of the world, unless you start to experience clutch drag, in which case you might want to put it right.

Here's why I say that: I can see NO ENGINEERING reason for the "clutch boss spring" and Yamaha apparently saw less value in it than originally thought, because the "corrected" diagram I posted applied to the earlier XJ550s, the 400-4s, etc., and it had TWO of them (clutch boss springs.)

Yamaha dropped down to only one in the later 550s, and the bigger bikes don't have them at all. I don't see how it actually does anything.

Nor do the bigger bikes have the "tabbed" plain plates; and certain aftermarket clutches (Barnett) don't use the tabs on their plain plates, and it seems to make absolutely no difference. In regards to the tabs, I currently have about 1000 miles on a Barnett clutch in my '81 and can't see, feel or hear any difference at all between it ("untabbed" plain plates) and the basically stock clutch in my other bike. SUPPOSEDLY the tabs were to create an intentional "out of balance" condition on the individual plates to cut down on rattle. I don't know that it really worked.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further clutch issues.

thats great thank you for the info fitz, could use a guy like you around my bike. ok so now the carbs looking better apart from a very low slow drip which i think is the seal on the actual casing, i am in desperate need for a wiring harness completely stock i dont want to mess with the simplified diagram anymore i think its best if i just stick to the books. if there is anybody out there that can help me get ahold of one i would appreciate it also are there any other models or bikes that run the same wiring harness? ooo by the way i live in vancouver canada, close to home anybody? thanx for all the help guys, this site rocks!

No, all harnesses (that I know of) are model specific. The 650 Maxim harness would seem to be a basic harness that could be adapted into a "bobber" or project of any size. (not 100% plug and play)
