Building a mild Street Fighter bike from XS400RK Seca. Neat little scooter light and nimble, It's gonna be fun. I've noticed here some people refer to these as XJ400's. All my research confirms that they are indeed XS400's only imported in the US in '82 and '83, Unless I missed something.

Here's a pic of my progress so far.

I've had and still have several. They are NOT XJ400's. XS400 DOHC's...only made in U.S. for 82 and 83. PM me if ya need any help or advice on these little guys. Or review my topics on the forum.

    dw,

I see you did a street racker form a Maxim - nice work.

Mine is the Seca version. I've her pretty well sorted and almost finished with build. Had a real rusty tank had to braze in some metal panels and now using Evaporust to get it cleaned out and finally will seal the inside with Red-Kote. After that just paint the tank and ride.

I typo'd on the years imported and made the correction. It seems the DOHC models are a bit scarce compared to the SOHCammers there plentiful and everywhere.

Do you have sorces for parts and accessories? Any tips or suggesstions will be greatly appreciated.

    GJ

    DW,

What kind of performance can I expect from the DOHC bike? I haven't had a bike this small in a while I'm thinking it should be pretty quick.

Also remember that the more weight you strip off of it, the quicker it is too!

I'll be keeping an eye on ya. I'm in the process of unload a couple interceptors to make room in the garage for a pair of XS400Rs that I plan to work on. one will be a fairly clean learner loaner and the other a ratrod.
A guy down the street from me gave 'em to me along with a pair of factory manuals, two sets of drum pads, oil filters and a few other bits. He has yet to find the titles but hey, free is free.

it's a close head to head race to see what my favorite four-letter 'F' word is.

Yeah, I kept seeing this fading red bike parked in front of his garage with square headlight and unmistakable lines sweeping from tank creases to side covers. I walked over there one day and knocked on the door. Talked to his wife who told me to come back when I saw his truck in the driveway. Couple weeks later did just that and asked what he might want for it. He says "well shucks I hate seeing it waste away" (me too, I muttered) and said I could just HAVE it along with the one in the garage buried in sawdust. Clearly all his spare time was spent on making canoes or some damn thing. (why not riding that lovely yellow V-strom?)
Anywho, I jogged home for a can of PB Blaster to free up the chains and pushed 'em both the five or so blocks home. One more trip got me the milk crate of fresh brake pads, oil and air filters and two factory manuals.
Total SCORE but boy am I in for some labor.
The one that was under sawdust should shine up ok.

exactly. I finally got around to digging the carbs out. A friend of mine is gonna clean 'em for the price of borrowing my ultra-sonic tank. (that guy is nuts over carb cleaning, somethin not quite right I think;) )
gave 'em a good looking over. Pulled the tanks, side covers and seats off. They're each pretty messy or banged up, each in their own ways but haven't noticed anything missings other than a cracked blinker.

I plan to make one nice-ish one as a learner loaner and rat the other out to a mean little black cafe thing (keeping parts as spares for the clean one, ya see)

My thought right when I got home was that even if I went crazy and threw the bikes in the garbage immediately, the pair of manuals would ebay out to be worth the huffing and puffing of pushing those rusty chains.

I have some side panels, gauge bracket, rear fender in good shape if you need them and would like to buy one of the gas tanks and a manual.

Jim, I'm getting another Seca this weekend. I may have a tank for ya. And why would you want to buy the manual when it is free online?

That would be great let me know about the tank. The manual I'm referring to is the one that comes withthe bike. Not that it has any special information just nice to have.
