ok so i'm new to this site and to bike "customizing" I dont know if there's anything already on here about this but... I have a 82 xj750 and I'm wanting to "open up" (cut off lol) the exhaust. I dont plan on doing pods to the carbs just yet but i was wondering if i modded the exhaust if i'd have to jet the carbs. I sure hope not. But any help is greatly appreciated.

try it and see, every bike is different. I'd think the best bet would be to leave the airbox alone, hack the mufflers, and do a plug chop (which I am sure you have no idea what I am talking about, google it) and read your plugs...oh and you'll want ear plugs too!

As long as you leave the collector box alone, you can change the mufflers without seriously affecting tuning or re-jetting. If you remove the collector box, or go to a free-flowing 4-1, you may need to re-jet.

You can switch to more open mufflers for a better sound without messing with the rest of the system.

DW is right though, these things are ungawdly loud with anything close to an open exhaust.

Take-off the Stock Silencers and put-on a pair of HD Sportster Mufflers.

You'll get the noise your looking for and retain most of the effect the Collector Box has Back Pressure.

Four Cylinder Bikes that get cut-off and straight-piped sound pretty annoying.
You have to consider "Noise Ordinance" and possible Tickets if you straight-pipe your bike depending on local laws.

luckily where i live we dont have noise ordinances. Heck majority of the people around here have 1 1/2 inch straight pipes on big jacked up trucks, talk about annoying. But anyways thanks for all the input

It's not so much about annoying the neighbors, as much as it is miles before you go stone deaf (unless you plan to wear earplugs.) Seriously. Loud.

One of my 550s came to me with a Kerker 4-1 with an open megaphone. It was unbelievably loud, especially for the rider.

last summer I removed my mufflers, leaving the collector box. I rode the bike like this for about a month. I Loved the way it sounded, but lost all my low end power. Eventually I had to put my rusted megaphones back on to regain the performance I lost.

well 2.5 would be ideal, but i always laugh when i see 2 1.5 or 2 inch bare metal pipes coming out the back of a truck, think they're so bad ass... I actually farm and dont want a pick up like that.

I had my bike running great with good color when i pulled the mufflers off and put on cheapo walmart chrome turn outs.. just tuned it and it worked ok.

I put on a 4-1 and it popped alot, but i never checked the plugs or anything because i had 2 weeks till college, but i put in 124's and it seems ok, i actually have to ride it first

Jets I would think not on the sync, but it is a good idea to sync them yearly the performance difference is amazing. The tools required are minimal and relatively inexpensive. And after you do it a few times it gets pretty easy.
