does california have a safety inspection program? i didn't see anything on google either.

your next stop would be to call the highway patrol.

utah has a safety inspection program. each year the safety inspection manual is updated and published. when i used to be a mechanic the cost to purchase the manual was $10. from the same highway patrol office all the shops would buy there safety inspection books for cars.

i've been able to download the manuals for the last 5 years from the highway patrol websight. so it might be free now. i've been retired for 10 years so i'm no longer emission and safety certified.

in utah. every vehicle on the road has to have a emission and safety inspection in order to get licensed. every year. motorcycles are only required to have a safety inspection however.

They are required on bikes that were originally manufactured with them. I was also just told that they are going to start issuing citations to people who have non-DOT approved lights on their bikes. No safety inspection in Cali but lots of license and insurance checkpoints around lately.

Here is the California Vehicle Code you are looking for:

24951(b)(4) - Turn signals required on motorcycles manufactured and first registered after 1/1/73. Except motor- driven cycles whose speed attainable in one mile is 30 mph or less.

Somehow I suspect most OCC bikes don't spend a whole lot of actual time on the streets...

I dunno, what you posted says it's by the Reader's Digest Association of Capetown, South Africa. Could be why all the specs given are metric, I kind of doubt it's a comprehensive reference on California DMV standards.

I think zombiehouse found the applicable statute.

It's usually 1973 because that's when the Fed (USA) started requiring them on bikes.

i dont have an actual law, but im from nh.... if cars there are anything like car drivers here, Id say add them just for S&G's.... and also for safety. I dont think we need them in nh, but i wouldnt be caught dead without them. theres always atleast 1 person a day who almost sideswipes me.... some cheap aftermarket turn signals MIGHT just save your life.... my 2 cents in case you care
