    Hi people,

Does anyone know the right valve clearance for a XJ700XS from '86??

I have a combined workshop manual for the 750 and 700...
It says the clearance for the 750 must be:

    intake: 0,11 - 0,20 mm
    exhaust: 0,21 - 0,30 mm

Is it the same for the 700 version???

If you have a manual for the XJ700X you should be fine.
The valve and shim arrangement for the X is completely different than the other XJs. It does involve pulling the cams and lots of other fun, time consuming activities!

HAP did a neat spreadsheet to make the calcs very easy. Download it from the shim pool paragragh "download the maxim x valve shim table"
    http://www.maxim-x.com/notes.html
It also helps you keep track of what was where electronically

Yeah I know the website, thanks.
And I've read it's a time consuming job! I see it as an challenge :)!

I do have the Manual, but it is a combined manual for the 750X en 700X. It does give me the valve clearance of the 750X, but the page were the clearance for the 700X is missing.... So I hoped someone here could help me out...

    ORIGINAL VALVE ADJUSTING PADS:

OEM VALVE ADJUSTING PADS, all sizes 1.20 through 2.40, fits all Yamaha XJ700-X and XJ750-X (water-cooled) engines.

NOTE: all XJ700-X and XJ750-X models use the following valve adjusting pad clearances:

    Valve Clearance Intake: 0.11 - 0.20mm (= 0.004" - 0.008")
    Valve Clearance Exhaust: 0.21 - 0.30mm (= 0.008 - 0.012")

The clearances are the same for all of the "X" engines.

I just found a replie of chacal under the HOW TO from BigFitz which says:

    700-X:
    Intake: 0.11 - 0.20mm (= 0.004" - 0.008")
    Exhaust: 0.21 - 0.30mm (= 0.008 - 0.012")
NOTE: special tapered-point feeler gauges needed due to extremely cramped working environment on these bikes; also, the X-models use a unique valvetrain that uses "pads" rather than "shims" and basically takes all day to perform the check, and about as long if you have to replace any of the pads on the 20 total valves!

So I was right :) Always dubble check....
