84 xj 750 starter clutch

    anyone got any advice on replacing the starter clutch on a xj750

    You could try the 'open heart surgery' method, like I did, but you are probably better to split the cases, either way you have just met your worst nightmare, good luck.......

    How sure are you that it actually needs to be replaced? Sitting for a long time and gumming up or even using the wrong oil can lead to believe there's a problem when there's not.

    well im not sure i was just narrowing it down. the starters good so i thoght that was the next thing. do you know of anything else i can try first. the starter ingages for a couple seconds then just starts spinning.

    Yes, most certainly. Start with an oil change, use a conventional "motorcycle" oil like Castrol 4T; you can use 20W50 instead of the recommended 20W40.

    Some more history on the bike would help us give better advice.

    the bike sat for years then i got it running put about 3 thousnd miles on it thenit sat for bout a month had prob with the starter so i put another on it. it came out of a 82 xj650 it worked for a little while but slowly started kicking out and just spinning. its just gotten worse

    A good test for a cracked starter clutch, is to remove the plugs, or just 2 of them, the s/clutch will turn the motor over with the less resistance.

    i pulled the clutch cover off and lost alot of oil. the he problem is still there do i need to drain all the oil. if so should i put seafoam in the oil to see if that will help break up any build up

    im also going to pull the plugs tonight and try it without them in it
