is there an "easy step" process to making forward controls for my 80 xj 650? i tried searching for it on the forums, but everytime i hit back, it kicked me out... sorry but patience is not my suit tonight. lol. I cant afford $200 pre mades, but can get a little creative.... just really not sure how pivot works on these setups

If you decide to make them yourself, you need tofigure out just where you want your feet to be first of all. Then make brackets (flat pieces of metal) in the shape you need to mount pegs and shifter points. Mine ended up being triangle shaped. Then you will need to make some kind of spacer to mount the plates to the lower engine bolts (you will need longer bolts)
Once you get that part completed, you will have to mount the foot pegs where you want them. Then mount the shifter pivot and brake pivot for your levers. These levers can be fabricated or use the stock levers, which may need to be customized to work properly. The last step is to make the shifting rod from the foot lever to the engine and the brake rod from the lever to the brake pivot (the one that pivots on the frame)
*You will want to make the shift/brake rods with some extra threads on each end, so you can make adjustments after everything is completed.

I see in some cases, a person can use forward controls made for other bikes and just fitting them for your bike. Forward controls used for older Harleys will work with some modifications to the mounts and rods.

This is not a very good photo (poor angle) but you get the idea. Instead making spacers for the forward controls, I bolted the flat plates directly to the engine bolts (1/2" longer bolts were needed) and welded heavy round tubing on to extend them out further for the mini floor boards and lever pivots.

If I had to do them over again, I'd have made the mounts come off the inside of the engine bolts (on the backside of the header pipes) which would look a little better.

I want to do it myself. Just wasn't sure howthe pivot setup works. Tried a prototype once but was 2 heavy. Kept downshifting on me. Trust me I love to build myself.. but on a budget. Would rather pay more to do it right once bc I can't afford trial and error. Right now

I wish I could just take closer photos of mine which would surely make it easier than trying to explain it here. Unfortunately, I cannot move around much today or walk very far (threw out my back) or I would go out int he ship and snap some close up photos of mine to give you a better idea.
I just took a quick look on Ebay to see what's available there and there are several forward controls sets at reasonalble prices if you decide to go that route. At least you can take a look and see just how they're made if nothing else.
I got the ideas for mine from my other bike ('96 Honda Shadow) which has factory forward controls on it.

i was on my phone... so last message was short to the point. thank you for the picture, and to the two who think im plain lazy, im not. I want to build my own... thats why i asked... im not sure how the pivot actually works, or if there is an easy way to buy or make one. the last time i experimented with forward controls... it was too heavy... and ket downshifting on me. i can figure out the rods and pegs and all that stuff, but even taken apart, im not sure how the pivot part works. all i was trying to do was get some info on it, but thanks for taking a shot at me.... thought this site was for helping and showing... not belitting people..... but its all good
